Switzerland plans visitor accommodations but many nations face shortages of food and coal, disorganized communications, and limited rail service. Pennsylvania's January industrial activity dipped sharply due to a steel strike starting January 2. The index fell to 155, down 21 percent from a year earlier and the lowest for January since 1841, with Pittsburgh area carloadings and industrial power sales at wartime lows.
Mrs Elizabeth P Jordan wife of a Pittsburgh businessman and mother of three announced she will seek the Republican nomination for U S Senator. She said she will oppose Gov Martin in the May primaries and urged women to help build world peace.
The United States asks the Supreme Court to set aside the $75 million sale of the Pullman sleeping car business to a railroad consortium of 43 lines, arguing the deal would create a new monopoly and harm smaller railroads. Three other bidders and two railroads join the appeal, while Pullman continues operations under an extended stay.

Captain Melville J. Aston of Philadelphia Naval Hospital reports his 14 year old son Melville Jr disappeared during a family church service. The boy had no money but was described as resourceful and well behaved, and may have traveled a great distance.
In Albuquerque on March 4 a farmer asked how many hogs and chickens the government would accept for income tax payments. Giles Matthews of the Internal Revenue Bureau explained livestock are not accepted for March 15 payments. He advised selling the animals for cash and returning to meet with officials.

A Senate House Committee report urges a national budget check before new appropriations. It calls for limiting spending with a ceiling and adds proposals for higher salaries, an 18 member consolidation of all standing committees, abolition of special investigatory panels, and creation of majority and minority policy committees to hold parties and lawmakers accountable.
A Pittsburgh restaurant robbery ends in the fatal shooting of Master Jay Massey who died at Shadyside Hospital after a quick-acting thief fired twice. Detectives Stack and Corcoran suspect Massey resisted the holdup. A rogue’s gallery lead proved inconclusive as the suspected man was later found to be an army member far away.
Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz pressed the international tribunal for sworn statements from Admiral Nimitz to prove U S submarines operated under unrestricted orders. His defense sought British fleet orders to reveal merchant ships' reporting of U boats, firing on surfacing vessels, and attacking submerged submarines.
Foster Wheeler Corp. has placed a near 5 million dollar stationary boiler order with Pennsylvania Powers and Light Co. The contract covers four steam generators for a 150000 kilowatt steam electric station at Sunbury Pennsylvania, slated for completion in spring 1948. The design features the largest pulverized anthracite direct firing boiler yet built.
Greensburg Pennsylvania officials blamed new penalties for absenteeism for a 50 minute strike by about 300 of Greensburg High School's 1,500 students. Principal Samuel W. Jacobs said regulations were revised after discovering 200 pupils missed 10 percent of classes. The strike began after lunch recess.
Pickets blocked reopening of Grove City Brass and Bronze Company yesterday as 45 workers who voted against a strike in December joined the general strike in January. Some workers later voted to end the stoppage, while others kept picketing at the plant gate. Deputy Eastlick said two men were injured in a scuffle and the plant superintendent posted a notice canceling a back to work action.
The Lucerne No.3 Mine of the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co. logged three consecutive years of production totaling 3,108,458 tons with no fatal accidents, per L D Kimmel district inspector. The report details district employment, mine types, safety gear usage, and equipment counts, noting a drop in deep mines and a rise in stripping operations alongside varying accident figures.
McKeesport and surrounding communities in a 40 to 50 mile radius near Pittsburgh regained Penn Transit Bus Lines service after a 20 hour strike ended. Mayor Kincaid helped finalize an agreement allowing an optional extra day off for drivers or a reduction of the extra list if the plan is rejected.

The Federal Council of Churches called the session to plan evangelism, world order, relief, and returning service personnel for the postwar era. Dr. Wentz and Dr. Barnes outlined the aim to revise church programs and strengthen individual and community discipline amid rising cynicism.
Harrisburg reports GI Bill benefits paid to veterans rose to 4.56 million in the week ending March 1, a 1.76 million increase, while unemployment compensation gained 887 thousand due to labor disputes. State Treasurer Ramsey Sr. Black notes nearly 7.0 million paid to veterans and jobless workers, a two million plus weekly rise.
Charlie Taylor, 23, from Pittsburgh, after a 10 round unanimous decision over Freddie Archer in St. Nicholas arena, strengthens as a possible 147 pound title challenger. It was Taylor’s 18th pro win with only one defeat to Johnny Greco, and comes three months after leaving the army.
The Indiana County Guernsey Cattle Club will hold its annual meeting on Friday March 8 at 1 30 p m in the Community Center Building. Principal speaker will be Bob Stewart of the American Guernsey Cattle Club. Frank K Miller Clarion County Agent will discuss artificial breeding. William Juzi Pa Cattle Club will show a new colored film. Officers will be elected at a brief business meeting.

The GOP move blocks price ceilings on new houses and restricts government power over building-material price controls while seeking to expand mortgage insurance authority by one billion dollars.
A 15 member “Last Man’s” club was formed by the 15 remaining survivors of 150 freshmen sworn in 13 years earlier. They planned annual observances on March 4, held at a luncheon in the House restaurant, with 12 of the 15 attending. The idea originated after the death of Rep. J. Buell Snyder, and the group sent a letter of condolence to his widow Mrs Marlon B Snyder, who has been nominated to fill his unexpired term. The luncheon included Rep. Walley D Pa among those present.
