Some reports claim the outer line yet to be reached, others note heavy fire on inner forts and Turkish positions near Bucur Port. Rumors of German Krupp guns and aerial reconnaissance circulate amid conflicting telegrams.
In Mutsburgi on March 4 union officials describe railroad yard disruption as crews rise to meet demand. Pittsburgh & Babe Mrie Line reports forty crews employed, with seniority disputes between younger and older workers under a new law. Baggage masters on the Pennsylvania Railroad cite hardship from forced extra brakemen on through trains, reducing baggage master positions and altering duties.
Allied bombardment plans facing the Dardanelles are dismissed by Turkish emissaries as impossible to breach. They assert fortifications impregnable and landings at the Gulf of Saros impractical due to limited allied manpower. In Constantinople, officials fear a peace move to avert bombardment while public opinion grows anxious over a looming clash.
A 200 page German pamphlet, cited by The London Lancet, outlines a plan to derange British food supply. It urges banning export of provisions, reducing swine by 9 million, milch cows by 1 million, and sending prisoners of war to cultivate undeveloped lands. It depicts an economy shifting from production to consumption and stresses state control, with imports from the US and nearby countries constrained.
Ten more bodies were recovered from the ill fated Layland mine near Hinton West Virginia raising the total recovered to thirty nine. Rescuers face debris blocked entries and glaze filled passages as they push to reach additional victims, with many believed still inside the mine.
