PUC Probes Gas Rate Boost Proposal in Pennsylvania

Harrisburg says the Public Utility Commission will study an estimated 526 000 a year natural gas rate increase by T W Phillips Gas and Oil Co of Butler. The panel suspended the boost for six months until Sept 1 to hold public hearings. Phillips serves 34 000 customers in multiple counties and argues the change would distribute the burden equitably amid higher operating costs. Protests accompanied the filing and the proposed rate structure would merge residential and industrial rates into a single schedule with a $1 minimum charge for the first 1 000 cubic feet.
