Army Plans For 17 Year Olds Expansion

The War Department announced a broad expansion of specialized training for 17 year old pre-induction volunteers. The plan targets the 17 year old group as part of the already unaffected special trainees. Details were not released and a later announcement is expected. The department also outlined continuing medical dental and veterinary trainees in current ASTP courses after April 1 despite the overall reduction.

Five Children Burned To Death In Newark Del

Five children perished in a rural Newark Delaware home fire on the second floor as parents and another child escaped by jumping from a window. Victims: Franklin Edminston age 11, Bessie May 9, Carl 7, Edwin 5, Betty 4. The mother father and Franklin Jr 10 were injured fleeing from the blazing house blamed on an overheated stove.

State officials uncovered a man and wife on the Social Welfare Assistance roll with 2800 dollars saved for old age. When asked why they did not spend the money for living costs they replied they were saving it for their old age.

Advices from Washington quote a U.S. War Department spokesman saying the quadruplets would be eligible for dependency payments if their father acknowledges them as his children. The monthly payments would be 30 dollars for the first child and 20 dollars for each additional child.

Harrisburg to host 44th state American Legion convention

Soldier Vote If Possible Says Gov Martin

Governor Martin urged that soldiers in Pennsylvania be given a vote this year, pledging to use any means including a special legislative session if needed. He noted a congressional compromise on the foreign service ballot may affect the need for a session and said his soldier vote committee will study the issue. He argued voting is a wartime morale measure and discussed possible changes to the soldier ballot law under a 1943 pact with Washington. Morrison said thousands have requested primacy ballots and counties should check registrations to ensure proper ballots are sent.

Majestic Hotel Fire Displaces 400 Philadelphia Guests

A six alarm blaze swept the Majestic Hotel on Broad Street injuring two firefighters and forcing 400 guests, many aged or disabled, to flee. Firemen, aided by operator Ann O'Donnell at the switchboard, evacuated guests over two hours as damage exceeded 50 thousand dollars. Some guests found rooms in other hotels while officials predict a ten day displacement period.

Pennsylvania Labor Federation Convention Planned for April 17 21

Harrisburg March 3 The Pennsylvania Federation of Labor issued a call for its 1944 convention to be held at Wilkes Barre April 17 21. Headquarters will be in the Hotel Sterling with business sessions at Trem Temple. A reorganization plan to increase administrative districts from seven to eleven and the number of affiliated residents from nine to thirteen will be presented. The plan aims at more equal representation for workers across classifications due to new AFL unions and federation growth. Districts would be realigned to keep Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas in two vice presidents each, with other districts receiving one such office. Relief load increased in Indiana County funds

State Treasurer G Harold Wagner reported relief payments to needy Indiana County residents for the week ended show an increase from the prior week. Total payments reached $1359, which was $1611 below the same week last year. Bureau of Assistance Disbursements in the State Treasury show current week $1359 and previous week $1338.

Judge awards custody in family dispute case

District Judge George A Faust dispensed with formalities and praised a child’s description of the family. He awarded custody of John Beaver eight, James ten, and Paul twelve to Clifton Willis, 26, who had cut the boys' mother a year earlier.

Dust Blame Sours Murder Of Librarian In Cathedral

Washington police charged Julius Fisher with the murder of Catherine Cooper Reardon a 37 year old librarian at Washington Cathedral a noted city landmark. Fisher admitted fatally beating and choking her after learning she complained he had not swept dust beneath her desk. Her body was found stuffed in a steampipe pit.
