In Boston a heated anti busing issue shadows Massachusetts Democratic primary as eight candidates vie for delegates. Wallace draws antibusing support while candidates defend or dodge court ordered busing amid national scrutiny and televised panels.
A New York State truck driver Floyd J. Clark lost brakes on Indiana Hill and crashed on South Gilpin Street route 119, causing injuries to Clark and extensive damage to Mahoning Distributing, Bell Telephone, Penelec and TV Cable facilities. Damages exceed $50,000 with service outages and three hours of traffic disruption. Clark, of Tonawanda New York, was treated at Adrian Hospital and released.
In San Francisco AP Patricia Hearst’s bank robbery trial enters a potential final week as the defense nears closing arguments to challenge the government claim she willingly joined the SLA. Dr. Margaret Singer is expected to testify on taped vows and script readings used to undercut Hearst’s testimony.
A weekend dual buggy crash fatally injures a Mayport area resident. Traffic summary on page one section two notes the incident as part of local road dangers. Another report in London Heathrow and Paris CDG noise complaints declines, per AP special on page sixteen.
A new report shows developing countries doubled weapon outlays from 16 billion to 39 billion between 1960 and 1974 and global military spending nears 300 billion in 1974. The United States and Soviet Union accounted for about 60 percent of world spending.
The Gazette reports continued mild conditions with weekend outdoor enjoyment. Chief Tommy Hawk says more of the same is in store as temperatures reach mid 60s today and Tuesday. Tonight and tomorrow will dip to the upper 30s to low 40s with partly cloudy skies and scattered showers or thundershowers, a 40 percent rain chance.
Peter R Bickford aged 23 is listed in Beaths Obituaries on page 26 with residence Loretto. The notice appears among other deaths and memorial entries in the local death notices section.
Nor man John Rees, a 69 year old Mobil Oil engineer, died of a self inflicted gunshot. Investigators described the case as an apparent death by own action after a Times Herald report alleged he spied for the Soviet Union and worked as a double agent for the FBI. His son and neighbors expressed disbelief at the espionage claims.
A police and FBI sting operation in a Washington warehouse raked in 2.4 million in fake fencing sales over five months. About 100 people were arrested, including assistant U.S. Attorney Donald B. Robinson Jr., who faced bribery charges. The raid recovered 1,500 stolen credit cards, 460 HUD checks, 18 vehicles, 700 savings bonds, and other loot.
IRS figures show returns 9.7 percent behind last year as the campaign fund earmark rate hits a record high and refunds average rises to 422.03 dollars. About 29 million of 86.2 million expected returns have arrived, with 66.2 million contributed to the campaign fund since 1973 and 9 million distributed to candidates so far.
Moscow AP records that the Soviet Communist party congress praised communist revolutionaries worldwide and pledged help. Delegates, including 100 foreign comrades, cheered a resolution favoring legal and underground communists and a plan to erect a statue in their honor in Moscow. Brezhnev’s report endorsed progress and future leadership, urging support for global depenten and Marxist movements.
