US Cardinal Samuel Stritch archbishop of Chicago was named by Pope Pius XII as pro prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome. The 70 year old cleric will leave Chicago for Rome where a new Chicago archbishop will be named. He is the first American cardinal to join the Curia in this leadership role and the third non Italian to head the congregation.

Admission applications for women and men both boarding and day are still being received at Indiana State Teachers College for the September 1958 term according to Dr Trevor Hadley director of admissions. The college still has room for women day and commuting students and for men students in all six curricula areas art business home economics music elementary and secondary fields. Dormitory space is closed for women in all curricula. At present no more women can be admitted who would room and board on campus. However Indiana State Teachers College can accept men students in all categories and in all curricula and women students who are day or commuting students.

Barons Arrested In City Police Bribe Roundup
Seventeen men known as the numbers barons in the Jovery racket were arrested in Pittsburgh on charges of bribing or attempting to bribe city policemen. Warrants issued yesterday. Bond set at 2500. Seven Family Members Die In Fire In Deraleh New York
A fire destroyed a two story Deraleh home early today killing seven members of the Lloyd Van Ornum family and a guest. Five other relatives escaped with a volunteer firefighter injured. The dead include the parents, Geneva 44 and the father 44, and children Lionel 7 Penn 8 Carol 10 Laurel and Donald 18. Survivors are Lloyd Wayne 12 Alberta 11 Albert 14 Jane 12 James 19 and Jane Barden 15. One sister Jov 15 works at a nearby church parsonage and stayed elsewhere. George 21 was in hospital in Canton and Olen Bristol 41 a Dekalb Junction firefighter also hospitalized. Fire is believed to have started in an upstairs bedroom oven.

Lumber Firm Owner Dies in Indiana Hospital at 61
CUPYMER Wokarl Oakes, longtime resident and owner of Oakes Lumber Co, died yesterday afternoon in an Indiana hospital at age 61. A WWI veteran, he was a charter member and first commander of Clymer Post 222 American Legion, and a charter member of Ridiana Post 1959, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also belonged to the Clymer Presbyterian Church and the Lymer Volunteer Fire Department. An obituary appears in today’s Gazette.
