An American consulate official says the US liberty ship Martin Lehmann abandoned a blockade run with a cargo of rubber sugar and quinine, while an Indonesian Republic spokesman denied the claim and said the ship remained at Cheribon awaiting orders from Isbrandtsen of New York. Dutch NEI officials warned force could be used to enforce the ban on exports. Captain Rudy Grey was told to obey Dutch orders to come to Batavia, but operators pressed for Cheribon or to proceed to the US.

Luciano's Cuban Appeal Is Rejected
Havana report states Supreme Court of Cuba rejected Luciano's appeal against his deportation order. The former New York vice king faced expulsion to Italy after a 30 to 50 year pandering sentence in 1936. Court said it lacked jurisdiction and that appeal should have gone to a lower court. Survivors of the SS Ben Fraem ming report a massive blast on the Mississippi River at Oak Point Louisiana. Three men died and seven were injured as the 1750 horsepower main engine crankcase exploded.
