NAACP offers city bid to curb tensions with jobs plan
More than 60 West Side youths attended a Monday NAACP meeting in Fort Myers to learn about Operation Summer. The plan, backed by national NAACP leaders, would register unemployed Negroes for existing jobs and push the city to open its municipal job structure to Black workers, with a goal to place at least 200 youths at $1.25 an hour. The group seeks housing code enforcement, a Negro aide on the mayor’s staff, and more Black members on city boards, plus a Neighborhood Youth Corps revival and expanded recreational facilities.

President's Uncle Huffman Baines Dies in Texas
Huffman Baines 83 uncle of President Johnson died in a San Antonio rest home after a seizure and oxygen treatment. Born in Austin in 1884, he was Texas secretary of state son and Texas A&M graduate who joined Bell Telephone before a long career. Funeral services set for 3 pm today with survivors including widow, son Huffman Jr, stepson Robert, sister Josefa Saunders, and two grandchildren.
