Four Workmen Crushed In Wind Demolition Tragedy
Four workmen were killed and many injured when a partially built six story apartment on 136th Street near Broadway collapsed during a wind and rain storm. The third floor workers were buried under bricks as the outer wall gave way. James Russ, a scaffoldman, and two unidentified men died at the scene. John Lawler of East 7th Street died from head injuries after being pinned beneath timbers. Rescue efforts were dangerous amid high winds as ambulances and police evacuated survivors and attempted to extricate Lawlor.
