In other notes, state toll in Western Pennsylvania reports few fatalities from weekend accidents with multiple injuries in Pittsburgh and Blairsville and related incidents.
An American freighter reported a red flare mid ocean about 1400 miles east of New York and 540 miles southeast of Cape Race. The sighting by S. S. Buffalo Bridge at 5:40 AM Greenwich time fuels hope the Spanish trans Atlantic fliers Franco and three companions reached the Atlantic mainland in one hop, possibly bypassing the Azores.
In a court proceeding the jury recommended mercy but the judge imposed a sentence of fines, costs, and an indeterminate term in the Western Penitentiary with solitary confinement, ranging from 10 to 20 years. The defendant, Popek, was charged with killing John Radi near Waterman on April 14, and robbing and burying the body near a railroad track. Radi’s body was found weeks later. A series of tragedies and near drownings unfolded near Blairsville and Greensburg. Roberta Baer, two, died from a skull fracture after a two-car crash on the William Penn Highway. Hazel Baer and Joseph Kurutz were seriously injured, with hospital reports later listing Hazel Baer in fair condition. The Baer family, including nine-year-old John Baer, faced injuries as investigators reviewed the collision, which occurred as both vehicles attempted to navigate traffic congestion. In Greensburg a cloudburst created a washed-out road and swift waters, sparking a dramatic rescue as two men nearly drowned while aiding a car and truck swept away in the flood.
