Freighters Sink in St Clair River Collision

In the St Clair River near Tashmoo, the City of Rowe and Linden sank after a collision. Cook Hardy and Wise from the Linden drowned. The City of Rome and Linden aimed upriver. Linden struck Kune causing the steamer to sink with the crew largely escaping aside from the two drowned. The Linden broke apart and capsized, drifting downstream before sinking on a shoal.

Hungry thieves hijack cow and steal hams near Butler

In Marion township near Butler on June 24, a group of hungry thieves hijacked a calf, drowned and cooked it, then stole 1% hams from cellars in the same neighborhood. No injuries reported. Local authorities urged residents to secure cellars and report suspicious activity.

Arbitration offer in UMWA split with Indiana operators

Springheia Illinois June 24 The state executive board of the United Mine Workers of America has offered arbitration to the Indiana Coal Operators Association to decide if miners by asking for a shotliver law violated an agreement. If affirmed the miners reimburse wages paid for shotlivers. if negated operators continue under the existing agreement and furnish shotlivers. National President John Mitchell to attend. A separate item notes a New York case where a stranger’s theft of $1,200 in postage and vinegar cost from a Lynbrook combination store/post office occurred after the storekeeper left the cellar.
