Bernard Baruch argues for dismembering German industry to curb war potential while allowing enough production for immediate needs. He says Germany will be occupied for years, cannot rebuild internally, and should be quarantined and reeducated before readmission to Europe.
Allied approval of a provisional Polish government of national unity was announced in Moscow. The coalition includes Soviet sponsored groups and London emigre figures, with representatives from Socialist, Peasant and Workers parties and potential inclusion of Christian Labor and Democratic leaders. Personnel to be named in Warsaw within days, followed by recognition by the U.S., Britain, and the Soviet Union.
San Francisco June 23 The Senate committee hearings on the United Nations Charter are scheduled to begin mid June as part of the Berlin postwar talks. Senators Connally and Weydenberg will report on the U N Conference achievements, with ratification likely around September 1 by 64 of 66 present. British and American leaders push rapid ratification while Halifax notes executive control in Britain over treaty approval.
TAMINENT Pa June 23 Early unconditional surrender of the Japanese could leave well over 20,000,000 unemployed in the United States by year end, former Republican Congressman Thomas Br. Amie warned at the With annual Triuent Bodel and Economies Conference. He said Congress has failed to plan for large scale employment and that postwar unemployment could rival the early New Deal. He criticized the Murray Full Employment Bill as empty and political. Col Arnold Whitridge urged universal military training as a path to lasting peace, arguing readiness would deter future wars.
Returning service men arriving back in the country after gergies bread will be excluded from party restrictions. The notice includes discharged personnel and those visiting their families.
Robert Stephens and 26 other sailors from a Navy landing craft gunboat survived a Japanese underwater mine near the Receiving Ship Trenatte island. Twenty were wounded. Stephens, Radarmott Third Class, USNR, and his wife Mia live in Clymer, Pennsylvania with two children. He trained at Great Lakes and served at Balboa Park and Camp Milio t. The crew is recommended for a Navy Unit Citation for devotion to duty.
Robert Fleming of Indiana, son of Mr and Mrs B F Fleming and husband of Mrs Charlotte Memling, is on a 42 day furlough from October 1 1941, before reporting back to the Royal Canadian Air Force base in Montreal. He was injured by a broken ankle when shot down over Germany and taken to a prisoner of war camp in late April last year.
Ford Lydick, son of Mrs. B at Orr Indiana, now stationed at the Army Redistribution Station Atlantic City after 639 months as a cook in the Asiatic Pacific theater. He wears the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon American Defense Medal Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
Pfc. Napoleon J. Patti, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Patti of Homer City and husband of Mrs. Josephine Patti of Indiana, is at Camp Bulmer NLC Redistribution Station awaiting reassignment. He recently returned to the states after 18 months in the European theater as a shoe repairman.
The Navy announces Cla LeRoy McHolland of Indiana, Pennsylvania, now serving at Na val Air Station Kaneohe Bay, advanced from seaman second class to seaman first class for faithful service and completion of the prescribed course. He is the son of Ross McHolland of Indiana.
Benedict P Miller, son of Mrs Mary Miller of Strongstown Pennsylvania, has been promoted from private first class to sergeant on the Fifth Army front in Italy. He serves as a squad leader with the 330th Infantry Regiment of the 83rd Custer Division.
Howard E Brown, husband of Mrs Tereas M Brown of 1237 Washington St Indiana, has been promoted to master sergeant. Set Brown serves as battalion motor sergeant and participated in the battle of Germany.
By order of Major General Thomas G. Hearn the nation’s first Infantry Replacement Training Center, Sgt. Drexell Caldwell formerly of 1194 School St Indiana Pa has been promoted to staff sergeant.
A Paris dispatch reports a revived plan to bore a tunnel under the Channel linking France and England, once a Napoleon era dream. A longstanding company for financing the project may issue shares, with talks expected with the British Government for agreement.
Pittsburgh June 28. Postmaster S A Bodkin announced the resumption of all mail service to Belgium Denmark France Luxembourg Holland Norway and Switzerland. This restoration expands air and surface mail routes to liberated areas as postwar relief continues.
Washington June 24 The new Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P Anderson faces a tough start coordinating production distribution and pricing of food to ease shortages. He plans to raise farm prices boost meat output stabilize supplies fight black markets and expand fish protein while securing labor machinery and transport.
Manila dispatch recalls the first Japanese landing on Luzon at Aparri on December 10, 1941, now recaptured in a swift thrust that sealed off major enemy forces in the Cagayan valley. MacArthur announces the end of organized resistance on Luzon as U S and Filipino units push toward San Juan, Tupregarao, and surrounding areas.
Governors from thirteen northeastern states call for using OPA meat ration points for meat only and urge enforcement focused on food rather than broader items. They want a single government agency to oversee all aspects of the national food program and had previously pushed to remove a rail bottleneck linked to shortages.

About 15 Japanese Americans, from a group of 200 bound for western Pennsylvania, have been placed in industrial and agricultural jobs under a rehabilitation program. Dr. Howard A. Mather of the War Relocation Authority Pittsburgh office said more internees will be brought here as jobs open and will be placed by federal agencies.
