The Senate debated Idaho Power’s Hells Canyon dams as Potter accused supporters of trading votes. Magnuson and Mansfield rejected the charge while Humphrey called it untrue. Idaho Power won a key license despite court challenges and ODM tax write offs stirred subsidy concerns for the nearly 500 million dollar project.
The Lama monks of China developed ju jitsu to defend themselves against armed robbers on desolate roads, Britannica notes. The martial practice reflects historical self defense needs in rural China.
Gov. James E. Folsom signed two acts abolishing the old law that sent county prisoners to the penitentiary to pay fines and costs. The state will no longer pay for short term sentences, and prisoners under 12 months will stay at home, sparing them a prison record while the state saves thousands annually.
Negotiations in the two week old Hammermill Paper Co strike in Erie Pa are stalemated with no further talks scheduled. A company spokesman said Hammermill rejected a new Local 620 proposal. About 1700 production workers are idle while 400 clerical staff remain on the job as pickets patrol three plant gates.
Dean Altemus a petroleum engineer from Creme Petroleum Corp along with wife Lorraine Creek of Stanton Heights visits the Pittsburgh area for the first time since moving to Venezuela 2 1/2 years ago. They note life in Venezuela is pleasant but has drawbacks and the family now speaks fluent Spanish. Their eldest sons received much schooling in Spanish and the youngest was born in Venezuela with plans to return in August. They entertain large gatherings and must plan food items and clothes far in advance due to biannual U.S. shopping trips.
A tornado in Fargo North Dakota destroyed or damaged more than 1500 homes, killed 10, and left over 80 injured. Red Cross surveys counted 328 houses damaged or destroyed, with 15 businesses wiped out and 30 majorly damaged. Three churches and three schools were destroyed or heavily damaged as debris filled the area.
Senate aid to the London disarmament talks may include a team of advisers led by Senator Hubert Humphrey. Secretary Dulles asked both parties to designate members to study progress and possibly join the talks if desirable, with Harold Stassen as chief negotiator for the U S. The president agrees.
Police seized the iCommunist party newspaper L Humanite stopping all copies bound for Paris. The issues carried letters from Algerian Communists accusing the French Army of the Melouza massacre and related actions.
Christina Wennerstrom the 16 year old daughter of a Swedish diplomat prepared to leave for Sweden with her mother claiming a return from an 18 day trip with her young boyfriend Huw Williams. Williams had been dismissed from the Senate page program for long absence while the two had hoped to marry but could not obtain a license due to their ages. Airline reservations were reportedly canceled after the news surfaced and police pursued Williams from the Wennerstrom home as the plan to run away again was discussed in a phone call.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike trial opened a Saturday session as prosecutors seek testimony on a survey of void filling beneath the Northeast Extension. Edgar F. Kudlich of Pierce Management testified on an independent survey of Manu-Mine Research and Development’s work, tied to a six mile spur section.
In Victoria B C Mike a 96 year old parrot drinks brandy daily and occupies a prime city lot over which hotelman Doug Abrams hopes to build an apartment block or hotel. Abrams bought the ground four years ago and learned of Mike and Miss Victoria Wilson whose estate included the five city lots where the Wilson mansion stood.
In Pittsburgh and Dallas reports, surgeon chief Dr Philip Rafle and others debate a $1500 medical bill for the Hooper family. The Hoopers say they cannot pay. supporters offer funds while hospital officials consider the cost and charity options amid public drama.
Obituaries note the June 21 deaths of Mabel A Bowen of Shillington widow of Thomas Bowen and other local figures. Kenneth Hilty, a World War I veteran from Saltsburg, died June 21 after a six month illness, with services planned for June 24. Vincent McKnight of Indiana died recently at home, with funeral arrangements in place. Daisy Cameron of Warren Ohio died June 21, with services set for June 34 at Bell Funeral Home. C R Laughlin formerly of Marion Center died June 21 at Edgewood and services held June 24. John Hamilton Fulton, formerly of West Lebanon, died after moving to California in 1943. survivors include Mae Robinson Fulton and grandchildren.
Two American Jesuit priests Charles J. McCarthy and John Alexander Houle were freed from a Chinese prison after four years and reached Hong Kong aboard the Radnorshire. Arrested for counter revolution and spying, they were released June 1a just before their sentences ended. Their arrival leaves six Americans still imprisoned in Red China as the number jailed on spying charges declines from a 1951 peak.
