Electric Chair Claims Rapist
William A. Davis a 27 year old Sumter County man convicted of raping a prominent white woman at her home April 15 died in the electric chair at the State Penitentiary in Columbia South Carolina. He entered the death chamber calmly and was strapped in by prison trustees. He spoke of forgiveness and asked Chaplain Davis to sing Let the Lower Lights be Burning. The captain gave the go ahead, the mask and headpiece were placed, and the condemned man joined in the hymn before the switch was activated. He was pronounced dead four minutes and five seconds after the electric chair was closed.
