Bill to fund state college scholarships heads to House

Harrisburg AP reports a bill before the House would allocate 51.8 million dollars for scholarships and related programs via the State Higher Education Assistance Agency. The Senate approved the measure 49 to 0, totaling 48.5 million for scholarships, 4 million for student loans, 1.8 million for admin costs, and 1 million to secure federal funds.

Bedford Banker Bortz Joins State Board Posts in Harrisburg

Harrisburg AP Bedford banker George R. Bortz becomes a permanent member of the State Liquor Control Board as part of a $46.5 million package, with a new interim term to Nov 29, 1978. The Senate confirmed three other appointees including Coroner Dr. Clarence Baxter and Dr. Jack J. Stokes. The Senate also approved funds for dog owners in a 1966 kidnapping search, debated higher education funding, urban transit aid, science foundation support, and university branch campus oversight.

Transplant Liver To Youth 16

A one year old boy received a liver transplant from a 12 year old donor who died of head injuries. Peter Bent Brigham Hospital reported the procedure late Monday. The recipient was treated for an unusual liver cancer and remains critically ill, with family requests for privacy.

Holmes wins special election for Texas House seat

In Dallas a special election filled the vacancy caused by the death of Rep. Joseph Lockridge. The Rev. Wesley Holmes Jr., 93, backed by the Democratic party, won 11,236 votes (52 percent) out of 21,622 cast, defeating Robert K. Schmitz, 44, the Republican nominee. Holmes succeeds the county’s first Black representative and is expected to run in November for a full term. The ruling may influence welfare policy funding.

Youth Freed After Testimony In Juvenile Court

A juvenile case involving 13 year old Donald Brownlee before Judge David H. Weiss in Springdale ended with the youth freed.
