Tieups On Atlantic Gulf Coasts Batter Maritime Industry
Atlantic and Gulf ports feel the pinch as ship officers strikes immobilize several ships. About 1,300 engine room officers strike against nine companies while 300 deck officers strike against 16 companies. Some ships diverted to foreign-flag operations or U.S. flagships not in the strike. Federal mediators seek settlement on staffing and arbitration issues. Military cargo ships face exemptions and tied up units in Virginia, Texas, and New York areas.
