Washington AP reports a live televised clash between Taft and Kefauver signal a hard fought 1950s presidential campaign. They trade barbs on isolationism and foreign aid while debating policy on Indochina, Korea, and the era’s Cold War tensions.
Washington reports the government will press a plan this week to mobilize steel from strike-closed mills to avert a defense production halt. A four man CIO United Steelworkers committee, directed by Philip Murray, will aid in shaping an output strategy while unions and industry seek to resume essential production.
Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison charged the Communists with responsibility for prisoner of war riots on Koje Island and for continuing a bloody, profitless war. Nam Il retorted with accusations of UN atrocities as talks adjourned after a 22 minute session, with a next meeting slated for tomorrow at 11 am.
Stockholm reports a Swedish unarmed air force transport was attacked by two Soviet MiG-15 fighters off the Estonian coast. Seven crew members were aboard. two were wounded. The incident sparked a protest to the Soviet ambassador and calls for a full investigation and punishment of those responsible.
U S Eighth Army will implement an extensive work and play program for Communist prisoners of war on Koje Island once Allied authority is recognized. Brig Gen Haydon L Boatner plans to finish dispersing large compounds into smaller units within about a week. He aims to break up compounds 602 and 603 tomorrow, housing about 5 500 Chinese captives and 6 000 North Koreans respectively, with no expected resistance. Boatner has already split six compounds housing 28 000 prisoners. 17 occupied compounds existed before the splits. Field Marshal Lord Alexander inspected the POW stockades today, touring the island in a jeep driven by Boatner.
The Associated Press reports hot humid weather contributed to 21 deaths in Pennsylvania as thousands sought relief in parks and pools. Five drownings and a heart attack during swim time were among the fatalities, with Western Pennsylvania bearing many highway and other deaths. Notable losses include D Russell Chase 58 supervisor of Penn Coal and Coke Co. near Gallitzin his mother Lois Clark 196 of Miami Fla and his 17-year old son Bernard. Other victims named Charley Hurley 20 of Niles Ohio and Stanley Spiher 20 of Apollo. Three crashes are described near Tyrone Apollo and Monongahela with several injuries. Veda Louise Ellis 7 of Aliquippa died after a passing auto struck her in Monongahela. Taylor Rice 63 found dead on a Marianna road. Weather highs reached 100 in Washington Pa and 90s in Pittsburgh Philadelphia Allentown Williamsport and Middletown.
Three county men returned from Army assignments over the weekend. Pfc. Arthur R. Strumbaugh of Indiana came from Korea via the transport Gen. William G. Darby through the port of San Francisco. James Fillar of Saltsburg and Stc. Frank R McKee of Blairsville returned from Germany aboard the Gen. W. C. Darby through New York City. Drapery close outs at Curtain Linen Shop.
Two youths died and six were injured during a two thousand one hundred dollar accident near Vandergrift on Saturday morning. Stanley Spih er 21 and Charles L Hurley formerly of Apollo now in Niles Ohio were killed. Injured were Frank Mihalik 59 Teechburg William Altimire Apollo Paul Eugene Whitlinger Apollo John Whitlinger Apollo and Raymond Mottura Leechburg. State police said a car driven by Whitlinger overturned and was rammed by Mottura’s car after leaving a dance in Ford City.
Representatives of labor and management in the steel industry joined in Sunday prayer for a just conclusion to the national steel strike that has closed plants in eastern Pennsylvania. At all masses St Anne's Church in Bethlehem, Rev John J Burns urged the faithful to seek an equitable settlement.
The Indiana Community Center and Municipal Building receive a fresh paint job assisted by the new fire truck ladder. Renovations include roofing work on the Ninth street side after rot. Mrs. Bonner King, mother of Sheppard King, had died yesterday, with funeral planned for today. The caretaker Abdullah and Fire Dept helper Schrader managed the ladder while crews moved between windows.
RUTLAND Vermont James Nymberg, 79, died yesterday from injuries after being thrown from a motorcycle. His son-in-law, George W. Bullers, 35, of Brockway, Pa., the operator, escaped with minor injuries when the motorcycle overturned as he applied brakes.
In Reading Pennsylvania a five year old boy and his four year old brother died after suffocating inside an unused refrigerator in their basement. The mother, Marie Kleman, found William and later Francis, with both bodies removed by a neighbor. The mother was treated for shock. the father worked as a brakeman for the Heading Company.
Washington AP A broad reorganization of the Justice Department began to take shape as three top aides resigned and new attorney general James P McGranery announced the changes The departures included Harold I Baynton H Graham Morison and William A Underhill all leaving to return to private practice or be reassigned The changes follow a period of criticism over asset seizures and a Senate probe into the department and its leadership Two more high level shifts were anticipated as McGranery reshapes the department to his tenure
Tony Zubas a 62 year old resident of Heshbon was found injured along Route 259 near Heshbon by a friend late Saturday night. He was admitted to Indiana Hospital at 12 50 a m Sunday with head injuries listed as serious by hospital authorities. State police say Zubas apparently fell and struck his head while walking. his friend Albert Bertolino of Heshbon found him there.
Ernest Clyde Roberts 63, operator of a garage in Cherry Tree and Barnesboro, died Saturday at Miner's Hospital Spangler after a short illness. He was born November 25 1884.
Robert W. Borland of Edinboro, a 59 year old Greyhound Lines bus driver, died of a heart attack as he prepared to pull out for Erie in Kane Pennsylvania yesterday.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower edges toward a direct clash with Senator Robert A. Taft for the Republican presidential nomination. Two weeks of civilian campaigning have pulled him deeper into the race, with aides predicting he may abandon his no personalities line and go after Taft before the week ends.
Two people were hurt in a three car crash one mile north of Nanty Glo on Route 46 at 7 p m Saturday. Mrs Ivay Johnson and Myra Johnson of Nanty Glo were treated for body lacerations while a car owned by Martin Miller of Indiana sustained about 100 dollars in damage per police estimates. The Nanty Glo couple’s car collided with a second car that then struck Miller’s parked vehicle.
Scranton Pennsylvania Gov. John Fine says in a radio interview he now leans toward Dwight D. Eisenhower for president, reversing his three month stance. He cites changed views on foreign policy and says Taft and Eisenhower are now close, open to joining a delegate coalition if it benefits America.
The Long Island Rail Road faced a sudden walkout by 360 engineers and motormen after 3 am, halting service and disrupting New York commuters. The strike, deemed unauthorized, tied to National Railway Labor Act disputes and the May 23 rail agreement, leaving riders to rely on buses and other transit.
