June 14 marks the flag’s adoption anniversary, yet its meaning deepens with time. The flag speaks anew for all states and for a loyal brotherhood, defended by both men and women who see in it a splendid message of exalted, selfless resolve.
The text argues that a dream of uniting diverse peoples under force failed, as Czechs Magyars Croats Serbs Roumanians Turks Armenians and others desired independence. It asserts German state planners pushed a policy across Austria and beyond, with Berlin dictating actions since the war began and the Austrians now seeking freedom.
The speaker argues that Berlin seeks a peace advantageous to Germany by exploiting allies and internal dissent. They claim Germany controls Belgium and parts of France, pressures Russia, and uses liberal figures to advance a vast expansion of German power. If failed, Germany risks internal upheaval. if successful, America and the world face renewed aggression.
In a fervent wartime message the speaker declares a Peoples War against imperial German aims. He denounces German agents in the United States, vows to break through hypocrisy, and asserts America must help free the world or risk being dominated by armed power. He pledges national resolve and a new glory for the nation.
Washington reports two hundred aliens described as enemies of the United States including Germans have been arrested since the declaration of war. Detainees were moved quietly to detention sites, with many arrested from ongoing census investigations. In Chicago, seventy five men were arrested for failing to register on June 5. In New York, Louis Kramer, an anarchist, was sentenced to two years in Atlanta prison and fined ten thousand dollars for conspiracy to distribute anti conscription literature, plus a year for failing to register. Morris Becker received one year and eight months on conspiracy charges. Herman Levins faced eleven months and twenty nine days for not registering under the selective act.
Officials report strong progress with Liberty Loan subscriptions led by Bethlehem Steel employees and diverse cities. About 540 workers at the plant contribute to a total of 28,500 dollars as portions of bonds are paid through installments. Washington officials expect a full, possibly heavy oversubscription, with many returns still pending.
A historical health ad lists that catarrh and consumption can be cured by a new special combined treatment. Dr Barnes accepts only cases greatly benefited, with frank removal if incurable, and advertises at Moore Hotel Indiana.
