Mayors Hear Humphrey Urge War on Slums in Cities

Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey urged mayors at the United States Conference of Mayors to back the demonstration cities bill to rebuild central and slum areas. He said the enemy within is slumism and pressed for more federal funding while preserving urban renewal and antipoverty programs. Mayors Cavanagh Collins and Lindsay also called for reassessment of domestic and international spending amid Viet Nam debates.

Lake Erie Pollution Mess Faces Years of Cleanup

Detroit AP report quotes Matthew E. Welsh head of the U S Canadian commission on Lake Erie pollution. He says it will take years to clean up the mess and notes Michigan and Canadian officials push industries around the lake to install antipollution gear. Estimated cost reaches about 200 million for Detroit area industries and cities. The banana plant detail appears unrelated and copied in error.

Fallen Leaders Cast Ballots in Soviet Sunday Voting

In Moscow two former Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev and V M Molotov appeared at polling stations as the Communist party again secured unopposed candidates for Parliament. Khrushchev, 72, smiled and joked about illness while Molotov, 76, left with his wife after voting. The scene underscored a largely ceremonial election expected to yield overwhelming party support amid a 140 million voter base.
