London June 13 an Australian welder Vincent Lawlor was ordered held for trial on charges of firing shots near the Duchess of Kent and into the home of Princess Royal. Prosecutors said he rode a bicycle with a sawed off rifle near royal residences and fired twice. He pleaded innocence claiming no harm intended, while police found 21 rifle rounds and 10 airgun pellets, with a thousand more pellets at his lodging. The Duchess and Lady Portarlington were unharmed as they left for a movie in their car. Lawlor said he carried the gun several days thinking of meeting dukes and kings.
