A group of Indiana girls launched the Indian Springs Swimming Pool season amid June breezes. Photographers captured them ready to swim in the woodland pool or sunbathe. Tickets are on sale. later notices will give times for pool events and Red Cross Life Saving classes.
Hollywood star Jimmy Stewart is linked to a possible Indiana Pennsylvania premiere of the film Harvey. Hedda Hopper’s column cites the NY play adaptation and Harold Cohen repeats the story, fueling local excitement for a potential visit and premiere showing.
Attorney William Ruddock of Indiana was named to the Grove City College board of trustees where he graduated in 1921. Mrs. Ruddock and he attended their son Parker's graduation ceremonies yesterday, making him the first Indiana man to serve on the school's board.
Mike Costello 35 of Homer City faces three charges after an early Sunday crash on South Sixth Street in Indiana. He allegedly failed to stop and identify, drove recklessly and without a license. The collision injured Mrs. Mary Stefanik and her husband John Stefanik. Costello fled on foot, then was arrested and admitted operating the vehicle. Damages exceed 300 dollars.
A Houston man, Stanford B Twente, a 30 year old laundryman, shot himself while watching a Houston Tulsa game on TV. A note left June 3 named Bailey Twente and his wife’s insurance policy. Justice of the Peace ruled the death an action of self destruction based on television evidence. Twente had entered the stadium press box moments earlier and spoke with broadcaster Dick Gottlieb before the shooting.
Washington reports Senators seek more details in the Amerasia documents case with Philip Jaffe, editor of Amerasia Magazine, as a key figure. Jaffe pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obtain illegal possession of federal documents after an investigation found government papers at the magazine’s New York headquarters.
Wolfeboro report says five member New Hampshire Board of Registration in Medicine expects to reinstate Dr Hermann N Sander within days after he applies for reinstatement. Board suspended license after his murder acquittal in death of cancer patient Mrs Abbie C Borreto. Sander may apply June 19. counsel plans filing before then to speed review.
Joseph B. Sleigh age 24 sustained multiple brush burns in a Saturday motorcycle crash. He was admitted to Indiana Hospital. A meeting of the Brush Valley chapter of the Nurses Alumnae of Indiana Hospital is set for Tuesday evening June 13 at 6 PM at Community Center building. Bid limited to members.
Homer City moves to form a chamber of commerce for Homer City and vicinity. An open meeting is set for June 19 at 7 30 p m in the old American Legion Building on Wiley avenue with W P F Schenck of the State Chamber of Commerce as guest speaker. Letters will be mailed to merchants inviting their attendance and R Walcheck and Harold Nesbit lead the effort. A street demonstration of fighting extinguishers is planned in Marion Center on June 1 2 at 7 30 p m with a Power Pak Product Co representative present.
The Baltimore and Ohio passenger and mail service between Indiana and Punxsutawney ended with Saturdays last run, leaving Indiana at 3 20 p m. The 46 year old service began in 1904 and featured long serving crew members including engineer Pat Hanna and conductor Mike McGannon on the final run. M S Reams and Thomas Baird commanded the last trip from Punxsutawney. Indiana station agent Robert Flick and first train rider G B Neal of Homer City witnessed the farewell. Star Mail Route operation is awarded to Wayne Pearce Punxsutawney starting today to replace former B and O service, per postal department order.
Richard John Ganley of 1240 Church Street Indiana was charged with failing to stop at a stop sign after a collision with a car driven by Margaret Rees Dewart of 655 Chestnut Street Indiana at the Seventh and Maple streets intersection. August M. Dewart, a passenger, had facial cuts. Mrs. Dewart’s mother had facial bruises. Damages estimated around $300.
Daytona Beach June 12 A city lifeguard named Bill Chamberlain netted a 27 pound sea bass with his bare hands. The fish was trapped in shallow water behind a bar during an outgoing tide. Chamberlain sprang in and struggled to subdue the fish for 30 minutes in a dramatic rescue.
Dr John I Wiseman 64 and his wife Dr Katherine 60 senior Torrance State Hospital staff plan to retire in early August after 81 years of combined service. They joined Torrance in 1934, when 1500 patients existed. now about 2800. They will winter in Orlando and summer at Conneaut Lake. Their son Lore 29 works for Westinghouse at York.
J. Carlyle Orr Indiana County Prothonotary, badly injured in an automobile crash, has left Indiana Hospital and gone home to recuperate. He asks friends not to visit for now while he recovers and thanks all for the kindness shown during his hospital stay.
Four lives lost in an Allegheny River spillway as four others were saved by rivermen. Hero Hull Wright, 50, died attempting to rescue people from a 25-foot cabin cruiser hit by the raging water. A blimp, seaplane, and rowboats aided rescue efforts for hours.
Preliminary census data from the Census Bureau in Johnstown were received by the Gazette this morning and are being held for official release. Earlier information suggested the figures would be released today.
Court convened in Indiana County at 1 30 P M to hear the first three of seven cases listed for this term.

Smithsonian Ethnologist Dr Kalerve Oberg notes their fear that military secrets will be revealed and their bows and arrows are hidden when strangers approach. The tribes, with intricate body art and feather headdresses, practice ceremonies and live in dense forests near headwater rivers, keeping them largely isolated from civilization.
