Hoover forces press claim of early nomination on ballot while antis struggle bravely. Delegates gather amid tense scenes as delegates push for unity and support for the Republican ticket.
June 12 at Convention Hall Kansas City the Republican National Convention opened with Hoover seen as the likely nominee on the first ballot. Delegates and party leaders predicted Hoover would secure the nomination Thursday as the Butler Mellon announcement framed Coolidge as out. Idaho and New Jersey factions moved to back Hoover, signaling broad early support for the candidate.
The Commonwealth case against Millard Mardis William Campbell and Delmas Hartman for the murder of Frank Carney was postponed to the September term on defense motion. Melvin Mingham received a suspended sentence on liquor possession and sale. James R Layton was fined 200 dollars plus costs and 98 dollars to the prosecutor for drunken driving. Joe Grabowski also fined 200 dollars plus prosecution costs.
Kansas City June 12 The most talked of tale at the Republican Convention explains why Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W Mellon traveled to Kansas City without a word from President Coolidge on his nomination. Mellon asked at the White House before leaving Washington for the convention for the President’s wishes. He entered the presidential office seeking guidance.

Kansas City June 12 The 1928 Republican platform is nearly set with Smoot of Utah as resolutions chair. It adheres to the 1924 pattern praising Coolidge prosperity and tariff protection. The farm relief plank remains the point of dispute, opposing price fixing and McNary Haugen style subsidies. A Smoot draft copy was sent to Hoover.
Mrs Mary Dick of Penn Run announces the marriage of her daughter Martha B Dick to George Buck of Oak Park Illinois. The wedding was at the Presbyterian church parsonage in Wheeling Illinois by Rev Shaw. Miss Dick previously worked in the cashiers department at People's Life Insurance in Chicago. The newlyweds plan to reside in Chicago where Buck works in the Real Estate Department at Chicago Title and Trust Company.
Saltsburg members of the Indiana County Chapter Daughters of American Revolution will entertain at the Kiskiminetas Springs School home of Mrs. W. H. MacColl on Thursday June 14 at 2 o clock Those wishing to attend should notify Miss Minnie Russel by Wednesday noon.
Mrs. Andrew Paul of South Third street and her mother Mrs. J F Ebey returned home yesterday after visiting Cleveland, Ohio with Mrs. Ebey’s son and daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs Wilson Ebey. The Ebeys planned to continue their return trip today.

The unidentified 63 year old man found near West Newton has been identified as Alex Loeffler of Bairdstown. He disappeared from Westmoreland County Hospital in Greensburg days earlier. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 30 p m with burial in Blairsville Cemetery. The death is attributed to exposure and exhaustion. He was born in Switzerland and had lived in Bairdstown for 21 years. The deceased was described as mentally deranged.
William Mann Irvine, 63, head master of Mercersburg Academy for 35 years, died in Mercersburg, Pa, from a cerebral hemorrhage attributed to overwork and nervous strain after addressing seniors during graduation activities. He directed financing for the new Chapel and Main Hall and is survived by his widow, his mother in Philadelphia, and two daughters in Melrose, Massachusetts, and another residence.
The Racing Pigeon Club ran a 419 mile race from Greencastle Indiana on June 9. Heavy rain slowed speeds, with Sister led at 908.331 yards per minute, Hap py Boy second at 894.171, Checkers third at 750.490, and Repeater fourth at 735.938. Next race is June 16 from Effingham Illinois, 509 air miles from Indiana.
At Kansas City Jun 12 Senator Simeon D. Fess of Ohio delivered the keynote for the Republican National Convention. He framed the campaign around general prosperity and left the door open to a Coolidge draft, noting some believe he may retire. The speech emphasized unity amid candidate and platform battles.
The Public Affairs committee led the Indiana Kiwanis Club dinner at the Indiana Hotel last evening. Winfield King chaired the event with Mrs. John Goheen performing two songs. Frank L. Neff, president of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, and H. M. Spengler of Johnstown spoke on service to the community and on the home school and church.
Mrs. Leda Williams of Water Street attends commencement at the University of Pittsburg as her daughters Marian and Charlotte Williams graduate with Bachelor of Science degrees. Both are Beta Phi Alpha members. Two games a week begin tonight with Fulton Run and continue with Stafford A.A. on Wednesday, plus a game Thursday at West End Park 5:30 PM.
Pittsburgh officials face requests to suspend police officers and magistrates indicted in Pittsburgh's political rum ring case. The federal grand jury charged 167 people including Superintendent Peter P. Walsh and two legislators with violating prohibition laws. Trial is slated for October or November, not a summer session. Community leaders urged immediate action.

John and Mrs Moorhead of West Philadelphia street celebrate the birth of a nine and a half pound son. Both mother and child are reported well as John beams with infectious pride in the family milestone.
Forty members of the King's Daughters Class at First United Presbyterian Church, led by Mrs. J. Pinkerton, met at Mary and Gertrude Moorhead's home on Clymer road for a monthly business meeting and social. They are active, supporting two girls in an Egypt mission school.

Warren Nevin Drum principal of the State Normal School at Tuck Haven from 1920 to 1925 and since 1925 Dean of Instruction at Indiana State Teachers College died in Indiana Hospital after a brief illness. Born near Hazleton, he earned a B S from Columbia Teachers College in 1914 and M A in 1918. He taught and led schools in Millville, Cliffside Park, Flemington, Kingston, and Williamsport before his Indiana service. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and Phi Delta.
Squire Walter H. Jackson rendered his decision at two o clock yesterday afternoon in four charges against Marco Lanich of McIntyre. The case stemmed from a wreck at School street and Oak land Avenue. Lanich was fined 25 dollars on the first charge, 10 dollars on the second and third charges, and found not guilty on the fourth. The fines included costs and involved driving with an invalid license plate and reckless driving remarks.
Kansas City June 12 The opening day program of the Republican National Convention begins with an 11 a.m. CST call to order by Chairman William M Butler of Massachusetts. An Episcopal invocation by Bishop C S Partridge and performance of The Star Spangled Banner mark the ceremony, with Madame Schumann-Heink leading the convention. The reading and adoption of the temporary roll and the call of the convention follow.
