Four psychiatrists testified that 20 year-old Ralph Hawk who pleaded guilty to igniting a bungalow in which a mother and daughter burned to death knew right from wrong but his judgment was not normal. Hawk said he could not explain why he started the fire that killed Mrs Hazel Gelwix and Helen Gelwix. He testified he struck Catherine Gelwix, another daughter, on the head with a flashlight. Neighbors rescued Catherine, who later said she was an expectant sister’s sister and that Hawk and she were to be married January 2.
