Carpenters Build 880 Feet of Ladder in 10 Hours
In Shamokin on June 9 a crew constructed 880 feet of ladder in under ten hours under difficult conditions. Five miners were trapped at the bottom of a 380 foot shaft at Neilgon mine when the water band on a cage hoist broke and could not be repaired. Carpenters raced to the shaft, built ladders to the surface, and rescued the men about one hour after the failure. the miners, exhausted yet safe, had eaten lunch earlier and were eventually brought out around two in the morning.

Careless Packing Hits Egg Shippers With Losses
A Harrisburg survey shows Pennsylvania egg shippers lost about $1700 on 504 cases due to smashed, leaking, cracked or stained eggs in New York City. Most losses stemmed from worn-out packing materials, missing filler flats, and warped flats. Damaged eggs were caused by newspapers used as padding and improper case packing, with 18 shippers in 19 counties represented. Bradford, Lancaster, York, and Erie counties suffered heavy losses.
