A Coast Air crash Sunday leaves 49 dead as details emerge from flight data and emergency responses. Investigators probe cause while relatives await news at regional hospitals and authorities coordinate memorials.
A high school student reported seeing wreckage of a jetliner in the Sierra Madre mountains with no signs of survivors. Rescue teams faced a cliffside, fog and rugged slopes, with bodies to be moved by helicopter from 800 yards away. It may take days to recover all victims.

Edwin M. Smith a mathematics professor at Indiana University received his doctor of education degree in educational administration at Ball State University in Muncie during the June 3 commencement. Smith an IUP faculty member since 1969 wrote his dissertation on preparing Indiana elementary teachers for the emerging school mathematics curriculum. He was born in London and studied at King’s College Oxford Chelsea College. He taught in London schools 1940 to 1950 and was a senior mathematics lecturer at University College of Freetown Sierra Leone 1952 to 1965 before joining IUP.
Indiana Optimist Club cancels the planned dinner meeting and urges members to report to the Herman Harris Little League Field for a work night instead.
The Supreme Court refused to review a lower court ruling that allows the United Transportation Union to call selective strikes against individual railroads. The Circuit Court of DC said the Railway Labor Act permits strikes by a union in good faith, marking the first such authorization in a national bargaining context.
In a mass walkout by drawbridge operators part of Local 237, about two dozen New York City bridges were abandoned, paralyzing interborough traffic as water department trucks stayed idle. Mayor Lindsay sought an immediate court injunction while unions warned actions would escalate without pension reform.
Treasury Secretary Connally planned to urge the Senate Banking Committee to approve a $250 million loan guarantee for Lockheed Aircraft Corp to avert bankruptcy and protect thousands of jobs and technology. Opponents called it bad economics and a blow to free enterprise, while supporters warned of widespread losses if the program fails.
