7 000 Miles to Join Army
Mining engineer Joseph T. Chilleras traveled 7,000 miles seeking a chance to join the U S Army. He sought help from Draft Inspector Martin Conboy in New York who gave a letter of introduction to the Twenty seventh engineering corps at Camp Meade. Chilleras, Columbia School of Mines graduate, had worked for Braden Copper in the Andes and later pursued enlistment through the U S Embassy in Valparaiso before the draft law prompted his return from Chile to Denver. His brother Julian joined the expeditionary forces in France.
