Local anesthetics blamed for deaths by two doctors

State Budget Fight Moves Into Senate

Woman Killed in Route 22 Crash near Altoona

Mrs. Fillmore Hartman, 76, of Elyria Ohio, was killed in a two car crash at Route 22 intersection six miles south of Altoona. Three others had minor injuries.

Armed Force Contract Cuts Ordered For Final FY Month

Washington reports say Secretary of Defense Wilson ordered cuts totaling about 500 million dollars for the closing month of the 1957 fiscal year. The Air Force to bear half the reduction as contracting slows, while Republicans reportedly plan to resist funding. An Industrial Development speech links Keystone Shortway approval to economic growth, warning GDP budget cuts could undermine progress.

Good Safety Record Over Memorial Day

Millions of American motorists faced the Memorial Day four day weekend with a safety record better than expected. A total of 396 highway fatalities occurred during the period 6 pm Wednesday to midnight yesterday, along with 13 drownings and 113 from other causes. California led with 36 deaths, Texas 32, North Dakota reported none, while the national toll exceeded the 1950 four day holiday figure of 347. The National Safety Council praised drivers and law enforcement for a fine job.

Khrushchev Seeks Counter Proposals in Disarmament Talks

In a televised Kremlin interview Khrushchev outlined Soviet offers to scrap trade restrictions and ease the Iron Curtain, saying the USSR would outpace the United States in growth. He urged reciprocal troop withdrawals and predicted social changes across Europe, stressing test steps toward disarmament and cultural exchanges.

Hotel Blaze in Worcester Kills Three, Injures Eight

A five story hotel in Worcester Massachusetts saw a deadly blaze in the predawn hours killing three and injuring eight seriously. Firefighters rescued more than a dozen from upper floors as flames poured from most windows. Witnesses recalled screams heard for blocks as guests were carried to ambulances and a city home for the night.
