The U S jobless rate held at five percent in May as the labor market showed little change despite vigorous economic growth. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 150,000 to 75.2 million, with rates for adult men and women near April levels and youth unemployment easing slightly for ages 20 to 24.
Nixon and Pompidou closed a two day summit in Reykjavik with a pledge to revitalize the transatlantic alliance for the 1970s. They left Keflavik Airport as a possible summit of North American and Western European leaders was discussed, aiming to include all NATO members and Ireland. Personal rapport warmed between the leaders as they exchanged political compliments.
Houston AP reports Skylab crew Charles Conrad Jr Joseph P Kerwin and Paul J Weitz slept late on their 28 day mission with three planned free days. They expect the first space shower to be tried later in the day while experiments are paused and Mission Control mostly observes.
A Cruzeiro do Sul Caravelle jet crashed on landing in Sao Luiz, Amazon region, killing all 16 passengers and seven crew members. The Belem to Rio de Janeiro flight departed Belem at 6 15 a m and was due to reach Sao Luiz about an hour later.
Emergency crews combed the wreckage of Indian Airlines Flight 440 near New Delhi as officials confirmed 48 dead and 17 injured survivors. Among the dead were four Americans, three Britons and a Yemeni woman. Survivors include M Bruce Sterling and his son Lee Allen, and Marine Lance Cpl. George M. Larson. Identification proved difficult, but relatives identified Mohan Kumaramangalam and Gurnam Singh’s son from personal items. The crash occurred minutes before landing. the jet shattered in the impact and ensuing fire.
Ronald J. Burkett, 44, of Punxsutawney is listed among the recently deceased. Glenn Gaston, 74, of Homer City. Mrs. Mary Langdon, 82, of Vandergrift. John A. Madison, 79, of Clymer. and Thomas Pendlebury, 80, of Saltsburg RD 1 are also noted.
Athens AP reports Premier George Papadopoulos abolishes the monarchy and proclaims Greece a presidential republic. He names himself first president after a 1967 coup and 1972 seizure of power, notes a plebiscite in two months and a general election by year end 1974, and accuses King Constantine of collusion with foreign forces.
Iceland reports 10 to 20 British trawlers rammed an Icelandic tugboat east of Iceland, leaving it endangered of sinking. Government spokesman Hannes Jonsson called it a horrible act of aggression while rescue efforts continue. the Arvakur coast guard vessel and 18 crew were involved, and a gunboat Thor reportedly aided.
Seventeen people including Samuel W. Harris were indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a $15 million narcotics ring spanning 1969 to last year. Harris, 27, described as the area's main heroin supplier, is already imprisoned for tax evasion and a prison breach. Among those arrested was Zack W. Robinson, 52, a former boxer from Clairton, nabbed in Harlem as the ring’s New York connection. Investigators recovered $270,000 from Robinson’s car. Harris had previously been sentenced to a year at Lewisburg penitentiary for narcotics possession but escaped after a few months.

The Associated Press reports a SAM Airlines plane hijack from Aruba to Lima with 89 aboard. Two young hijackers and seven crew members remained on board as negotiations continued. $50,000 was paid in return for freeing all aboard and abandoning the aircraft at the next stop. Women and children were released earlier. 11 men escaped Thursday and 9 more were freed today.
