Turkey Likely Break With Germany May Aid Allies

War Analyst Dewitt Mackenzie argues Turkey could sever ties with Germany and join the Allies, opening air and naval bases and a Danube front. 20000 Idle In Work Stoppages Across Plants

The Associated Press reports about 20 000 workers idle due to labor disputes, largely from five Detroit plants making Pratt & Whitney engine parts. Nationally about 13 000 more were out, with disputes in Granite City Illinois Roebling New Jersey Buffalo New York and other sites.

Monsoon's daylight raid on Anshan proves monstrous

A B-29 crew led by Major William Kingsbury aboard the Monsoon bombed the Anshan factory complex in Japanese occupied China, destroying iron and steel facilities. Despite aversion from fighters and heavy flak, the crew pressed a second strike on a Japanese airfield near Chenghsien after losing key instruments and encountering smoke and engine issues, returning home with aircraft in peril but mission accomplished.

Allied push stirs heavy actions near Florence Italy

Nazi infantry and tanks halted the Eighth Army in hills southwest of Florence as Allied artillery hammered German units. Dewey Tally in State With GOP Governorship

In a state where Republicans hold the governorship a senator tally shows a majority in the national House. Party leaders led by Gov and Mrs Edward Martin planned a large turnout to greet the presidential nominee and his wife and parade them to a downtown hotel where meetings would run to 10 p.m. He would depart Fitzaburgh tonight and reach Springfield tomorrow morning for talks with Gov Dwight Green of that state.

Marianas push and Pacific offensives broaden alert

Gen Douglas MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz announced rapid advances across the Pacific from Guam and Saipan to Tinian and Halmahera. Marines cleared Guam harbor approaches and swept Ninian town on Tinian while light airfields opened on Us hi. Casualties were reported for Guam and Tinian, with strong Japanese resistance remaining on the southern portion of Tinian as raids extended toward Mindanao and the Caroline islands.
