Prohibition officers raided the New Commercial hotel at Hawthorne Clarion county uncovering Charles Reitz serving two patrons a quart of whiskey. Arrests followed and 8520 bottles of high proof beer or 355 cases were found in the cellar and an ice box. Reni and Joe Reader faced liquor charges with bail set at 1500 and 200 respectively. Offenses centered on liquor sales without license and possession during the raid.
The board discussed benefiting the district through a fund managed by Garland with income for allocations. Four committees will study periodicals, educational campaigns, experimental schools, and research in industry and economics. Ships Coal Rationed Washington July 31 In a bid to conserve coal the government asks ship companies to bunker in allied ports only to the next port of call after August 5 foreign ships will be asked to bunker enough for return voyage to avoid bunkering in American ports.
The Indiana Baseball Club dominated Woodlawn 15 to 2 at Normal Park Saturday. Frazer pitched well for the Independents, allowing eight hits while Fraer and Clark led at the plate with multiple hits and power. Clark had a .1000 average on the day with 5 hits and over .500 for the season, as Indiana built a decisive victory behind strong fielding and timely hitting.
A string of weekend auto incidents left several hurt. Thomas, owner of Central Fruit Store, escaped with minor injuries after his Buick hit a construction bridge between Graceton and Homer City while en route from Coral to Indiana. Clarence Peace’s Ford was wiped out by fire on Monkey College hill after skidding into a ditch and a gasoline ignition.
Harrisburg July 31 A truck plunged down a foot embankment onto railway tracks delaying traffic as bees swarmed the scene. The driver Herbert Jacobs escaped with minor injuries while bystanders and rescuers worked to clear the wreck and keep trains running. No serious injuries were reported.

An infant of Mr. and Mrs. Chaljimers Blaenck’ buried Tuesday. A daughter born recently to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Bowser, and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shetler. Mrs. Maud Bowser and her daughter Miss Nula Bowser of Kittanning visit the Bowser home. Blackberry crop in the vicinity is unusually abundant this season.
Reporters describe strikebreakers hired by Chicago and North Western and other lines on sightseeing trips at railroad expense. Many gave false names, lacked railroad experience, and joined various shops. Workers travel cities feeding thousands of transient hirelings as the railroads promote a new slogan to lure men away from unions.
Robinson reports rapid progress on W. H. Fisher's new Chestnut street residence and anticipates moving in early September.
