Under Capt Lovette the ship debuted March 18 against Ryukyus and Inland Sea Japan, credited with shooting down two planes and earning six assists on enemy aircraft. Its 12 inch guns also struck two Japanese held islands.
Debris and stones piled as remaining walls of the 87 year old Central North Broad Street Presbyterian Church buckled after heavy rains. Officials say removal of stones may start today and note Theodore Roosevelt once worshipped there. Brazil remains the world's largest coffee exporter.

Berlin dispatch reports Capt. Car G. Schultz was set to wed WAC Sgt. Kanela Koulouvaris in Berlin when his wife Ruth Priscilla Schultz announced she is his spouse and mother of two. The ceremony was canceled after two hours, as the Army investigated the captain’s marital status and the alleged other relationship.
Washington July 30 CAP Nearly 400 Japanese ships have felt the sting of the USS Intrepid as she adds new laurels to a record of 80 ships sunk 30 probably sunk and 178 damaged. The Navy lists 28 awards for gallantry aboard during Leyte Gulf with Pennsylvanians honored including Noble Banks Futler Skegnell Swann and others for heroism in war actions.
Philadelphia July 30 AP Locarion boards get 30 percent less sugar for canning this year. Frank J. Lotus director of the Office of Price Administration Area says about 3,400,006 pounds will be available for canning.
London reports an authoritative American source says Justice Robert H. Jackson urged Britain Russia and France to reach a wartime war crimes trial agreement this week. He warned the U. S. will act alone if talks stall. The list of Germans likely to stand trial includes Goering Ribbentrop Streicher Ley and senior Wehrmacht officers.
Detroit July 30 Henry Ford aged 82 tomorrow said the nation and world are on the threshold of prosperity and a standard of living never before considered possible. He planned a quiet day with Mrs. Ford at their Dearborn home. He noted human economic and political problems but stressed that employment hinges on private industry moving forward unhindered and that more industry and competition will bring greater employment.

Rome July reports Alexander De Seversky, aircraft designer and U S war secretary consultant, said the Nazis built but did not down a jet propelled fighter with top speed of 725 mph. He added Germans planned a jet bomber variant of the Messerschmitt 264 to cross the Atlantic but failed to solve fueling.
President Truman expressed opposition to American soldiers and families settling in Europe. He said the best solution to families separated by deployment is to keep soldiers stationed at home. The statement was given in an interview with Stars and Stripes.

LeMay notes pamphlets signaling cities for destruction to compel surrender. Spaatz foresees fleets of 1000 B 29s with double European tonnage. Leaders emphasize overwhelming force against Japan.

Calcutta July 30 44 Britain s new Fighting Twelfth Army hunted down the remnants of the beaten Japanese 28th Army in southern Burma to halt their flight to Thailand. The force patrolled between the Rangoon Mandalay road and the Sittang River, mop up about 4000 crossing the river. Under Lieutenant Sid Montagu Stopford the army killed or captured more than 4600 enemy troops last week. They attacked a British held village 26 miles northeast of Pegu and faced strong opposition as artillery targeted positions on the escape highway to Thailand 28 miles east of Toungoo.
