An Army crew located a thick oil area about 1,500 feet across 500 miles from Manila, believed to mark where the Transpacific Hawaii Clipper went down on Thursday night en route from Guam to Manila with 15 aboard. A Meigs lifeboat was sent to sample oil and water, with Manila confirming the discovery.
ML FGAR reports three Jefferson County men were sentenced to 104 days in county jail for attempting to wound and kill a deer out of season and for using artificial light. They were arraigned before Justice of the Peace William Reid in Brookville. The defendants are William N Kesterhalt, Ellis E B Kesterhalt, and Philip Ellis Dixon. Arrest followed a four and a half mile motor chase by Warden Lester J. Haney after witnesses saw them shooting at deer near the State Game Protectors School.
In a Forli address Mussolini rejected claims that Fascist race doctrine copied Nazi Germany. He said such imitation is absurd and asserted Fascism would not imitate others. The Pope had cited concerns over racialism, prompting unease about church relations, while Italian papers linked the doctrine to figures like New York Mayor LaGuardia.
Cobh Ireland July 30 1971 Douglas G Corrigan confessed fear of seasickness as he began the return voyage across the Atlantic in his antiquated plane. He boarded the liner Manhattan claiming it was his first long sea trip and expressed hope for the best but fear of the worst. He had already dismantled his plane and sent the wreckage back to the United States.
Harrisburg July 36. Governor Earle's four point jury program, enacted by the Legislature, sets four main provisions. It places misdemeanor charges against civil officers under sole House jurisdiction, requires governor submission within 90 days, and bars grand juries from considering such charges until then. It also directs Speaker Furman to appoint a seven member committee to probe primary campaign charges with power to imprison nonrespondents. It grants the Attorney General absolute discretion to supersede a district attorney, with court power to order the AG to step aside if duties are not performed impartially, and, finally, suspends the Dauphin County grand jury probe set for August 8 pending House inquiry.
Miss Agnes A Stadtmiller 64 died of a heart attack at 42 South Sixth Street. She was a nurse and welfare adviser for 15 years with the Board of County Commissioners. Burial at St Bernard Cemetery after Requiem Mass at St Bernard Church. Survived by sister Margaret and brothers Karl and J Clem ent Stadtmiller.

Governor Earle commuted the sentences of 45 inmates including Blake W. Warman known as Blake Smith from three to six years of solitary confinement at Western Penitentiary after pleading guilty to robbery of a person felonious assault and aggravated assault. Pardons were refused for Vito Palmieri of Indiana County and Mike Pidhinway Jr. of Homer City both convicted of second degree murder.
Harold Rust 65, grand master of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania Free and Accepted Masons, died of a heart attack at Mt Pocono while visiting. A former Wilkes-Barre banker, he was also past grand commander of the Grand Commandery of Pennsylvania Knights Templar.
The Public Works Administration and Reconstruction Finance Corporation approve 58 million dollars in federal loans and grants for a new all weather highway from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh. The 162 mile road will be four lanes, divided, with tolls to repay the RFC loan portion under joint RFC and PWA supervision.
The Treasury reports receipts totaling 12,750,584.55 and expenditures of 19,125,203.35 for July 28, yielding a net balance of 2,124,059,112.05. The working balance stands at 1,532,140,952.97.
Theodore C. Hoyt Jr of Punxsutawney along with Jacob S. Casaday and James P. McConnell are named to Indiana's state rifle team for the National Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry August 21 to September 10. They place third, second and ninth on the squad and aim to win national NRA and U S Government trophies in the world series of shooting. The junior matches for ages 12 to 18 open the series, which last year produced 867520 shots, with 85 NRA events including .22 and .20 caliber rifle, pistol and revolver contests and the government matches for service arms.
Fire destroyed the 10 room Rice homestead on Manor Street Marion Center early today. Discovered about 2 a m by family members the blaze originated in the back of the house and burned it to the ground in about 90 minutes. Five family members were inside but none injured. Total damage estimated over 4000 with limited insurance. The home had housed the Rice family for about 30 years and was over sixty years old.
S&S Mack of McKeesport and Brushyalley Township, president of the G. C. Murphy Company, was unhurt but shaken when his car crashed into a culvert after colliding with a truck on Route 56 at Waterman Till yesterday. The accident occurred as Mack tried to pass a truck driven by Wendell E. Wetzel of Homer City who began a left turn, causing a slight collision and sending the Mack vehicle off the road. Damages were estimated at $300 for the Mack car and $15 for the truck.
The Court House will be closed until 10 o'clock Monday morning in observance of the funeral of Miss Agnes Stadtmiller.
Philadelphia July 39 Weary question before federal court whether a stubbed toe can cause death. Mrs Florence M Williamson sues for 15000 under an accident policy claiming a blood clot formed from a stubbed toe went to an artery and caused her husband Thomas’s death three months later.
One man died and three were hurt in a two car crash at Routes 22 and 56 in Armagh early today. Victim Michael Adams, 45, of Houtzdale, was killed. his wife Mary Adams and two other passengers suffered head and wrist injuries. The other driver was L O Carr, 63, of Martinsburg West Virginia. Coroner John Woods said Carr posted bond for the inquest as injured recover.
A Beyer raid by Samuel Dalessio with C Roy Held of Punxsutawney and local officers found a case of beer in the residence. The Dalessios faced charges of selling beer without a license. Bond was set pending a Monday hearing before Justice Walter H. Jackson. Dairy Lunch in Homer City advertises Sunday chicken or steak dinners.
Harrisburg July 30 AP Pennsylvania's grand jury investigation of a political scandal with Governor George Earle and 13 associates ended. The inquiry is turned to a legislative committee with a wide power subpoena and authority to probe civil officials subject to impeachment. The General Assembly adjourned dawn session pushing measures to suspend the Dauphin County grand jury and establish a state inquiry process. The state's attorney general would have power to supersede a district attorney when needed.
The planned reconstruction of Legislative Route No. 63 from Punxsulawney south toward the Indiana County line is postponed for 1938. Samuel W. Marshall, chief engineer of the Department of Highways, states its immediate construction is not contemplated. A prior pledge by Warren Van Dyke to tackle the macadam section this year is not being acted on.
