Price Raise on Lucky Strike and Pall Mall Cigarettes

The American Tobacco Company raised wholesale prices of Lucky Strike Herbert Tareyton and Pall Mall by seven tenths of a cent per pack effective today. Retailers expect about a one cent per pack consumer increase. Major brands now hover around 40 cents per pack in New York including tax. A wallet with a large sum was found at the News Stand this morning and the finder will be rewarded if returned tonight.

Former Clymer Man Shoots Wife in Colo

A former Clymer man, Sam R. Shaheen, shot his estranged wife Nellie Shaheen, a waitress at the Kings X sandwich shop south of Colorado Springs, then killed himself in a suburban shop. She survived with critical injuries. Shaheen’s motive appeared linked to a recent divorce filing and restraining order. He left a letter expressing love amid notes of personal ruin and had a barber past in Indiana Pa.

Volunteers May Save Draft Aged Soldiers

Washington reports Lt. Gen. Willard S. Paul says draft age men may still volunteer, with 18 085 switching to uniforms in two weeks, over half the 80 000 monthly average needed to lift strength from 242 000 to about 796 000, while 240 000 soldiers’ enlistments expire. Officials continue to plan a no industrial manpower stockpile for mobilization in October.

Richard G. Pifer, electronics technician, is in the Advanced Fire Control School at Naval Receiving Station Anacostia. The nine month course covers fire-control equipment operation including rangefinders, computers, radar, directors, switchboards and related units aboard ships. Pifer enlisted May 26 1941 and trained at Newport. He is the son of Thomas V. Pifer of 12 Penn Street Clymer, who attended Rossiter High School before service.
