Peace returns to two riot damaged Negro sections of New York City. Jeering white youths hurled missiles at demonstrators outside police headquarters late Thursday night. Police Inspector Henry Yack, 59, was struck in the right eye by a stone and remained in hospital overnight.
The FBI charged three Greenwood men Willie Belk 47 Jimmy Belk 19 and Sam Shafer Jr 40 with conspiring to curtail Silas McGhee 21 in his right to attend a downtown movie theatre Leflore Theatre. They posted 1000 bonds after arrest in Clarksdale. McGhee a SNCC staff worker was attacked on July 16 by three men in a pickup. An egg hit Police Commissioner Murphy but no pickets were struck. The antipicket event drew about 1500 in city protests.
Mrs. Alice B. Leopold, 84, longtime Indiana Evening Gazette correspondent, died yesterday in Marion Center. Crawford Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
