A fragment quotes Secretary McAdoo praising American support for France and Allied victory. It lauds the Treasury Department’s law and the gallantry of service members, urging the nation to honor those who aid humanity and world freedom.
United States soldiers allotments totaled six million dollars for May to support dependents. About thirty thousand commissioned officers allocated one million dollars monthly to families while noncommissioned officers and privates received four million. Nearly fifty million in Liberty Loan bonds from the second loan will be paid for by Army members and transferred to buyers in August from purpose allotments.
To finance the war it is necessary that owners hold Liberty bonds if possible. If cash is needed they should seek their bankers advice. Bonds are very desirable investments with non taxable features. Hold them if possible. consult bankers before selling.
In Chicago on July 24 Miss Nadine Jones was taken from the beach to the police station in a patrol wagon, wearing a bathing suit deemed too low by the arresting officer. She was released after a brief talk and told to add edging to her suit before returning to public swimming.
Bristow Oklahoma plans to organize a home guards company from ex soldiers aged forty five to fifty two. Leaders say the unit will recruit men with three to ten years of military experience and provide exercise training and a way to serve locally.

Manager McGraw offered no explicit comment on the surprise move.
In Lincoln Illinois on July 24 seventeen year old Frank Kurtoch fastened a shotgun to a fence and pulled a trigger with a string. The blast killed him instantly. He allegedly faced a brother issued ultimatum to leave or else and left his widowed mother with no support. He had been unemployed for some time.

New York residents experienced their first air raid scare when a roof siren at the New York Edison Company sounded during a test. Cellars were crowded as people sought shelter until officials explained the alert was a test and police had not notified the public.
In Madison Wisconsin July 23 a locomotive whistle valve jammed and despite efforts to free it the shriek woke the town prompting thoughts of a fire or a German air raid as the steam exhausted the boiler.
Aston July 24 Fred Denny twenty five employed by Western Cartridge Company attempted to explode a loaded gas pipe without a fuse. He held the pipe in his hand with a homemade fuse of paper and powder, applied a match, and the spark traveled quickly causing the charge to explode before he set the pipe down. His left hand was completely blown off.
In Worchester Massachusetts Henry Clay Grafton founder of Grafton Knight Manufacturing Company took his first lay-off from work to celebrate his eighty-eighth birthday with a twelve hour automobile ride. The firm was established sixty-five years ago and he has been paneling the clock 312 regular days and some Sundays annually.
An American sanitary commission headed by K Kendall arrives to assist in eradicating yellow fever. The Rockefeller Foundation sends four physicians and six nurses, welcomed warmly. A testimonial from Delos Knapp of East Kane credits Goldine with saving his son after numerous medical trials. Goldine marketed by N C Mills Drug Store in Indiana PA.

Pittsburgh and McKees Rocks mail carriers swap routine after day duties for Uncle Sam. They will work six hours each night in steel plants to aid the war effort against the Hun following eight daytime postal hours.
