Steel union leader rebukes settlement as repudiated

President Philip Murray of the United Steelworkers charged that Bethlehem Steel and other majors repudiated a June 17 settlement. He said Vice President Joseph Larkin and Bethlehem counsel John Morse presented a memorandum of understanding to push for acceptance, but other companies refused. The walkout has idled over 1.5 million workers as the Wage-Policy Committee weighs next moves.

Army Signs Eager Youth Soldier Walks 14 Miles to Enlist

Sgt John Campbell of the Indiana Army and Air Force Recruiting Station says he found a top candidate in 18 year old James Hutton son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Hutton of Marion Center R D 1 who enlisted in the Regular Army last week Hutton walked 14 miles to sign up saying he wanted to walk to enlist He hopes to join the Military Police but is satisfied to enlist in the Army.

End Of Rent Control Near Towns Warned

Washington officials warn that more than six million families could face large rent increases if local governments do not seek an extension of controls by the September deadline. Blade Found At Indiana County Jail Inmate Escape Attempt

Indiana County Jail authorities recovered hacksaw blades used by prisoner Claude Mason during an escape attempt. The blades, concealed in his trousers, were found in a garbage pail after an extensive search. Pittsburgh man Lawrence Scott aged 35 was found beaten to death in an East End apartment. Assistant Police Superintendent Henry Pieper said Scott died from a blow to the head.

Cambria County Girl Is Drowned In Loyalsock Creek

Myrna Schuman of Nanty Glo, Cambria County, drowned while swimming with her sister and brother-in-law in Loyalsock Creek near Montoursville. Firemen recovered the body three hours after she was missed following a late midnight swim. The trio had been living with John K. Nagle and wife.

Three Networks Pool For Demo Convention

Chicago reports that the American, Columbia and National Broadcasting Systems will pool their television coverage of the Democratic convention similar to their Republican coverage. Big State Demo Bloc May Back Stevenson

A large bloc of Pennsylvania votes urged Gov. Adlai Stevenson to consider the Democratic presidential nomination. Convention Honors VFW In District

The 26th District of the Veterans of Foreign Wars covering Indiana, Cambria and Armstrong Counties earned top honors at the Pennsylvania VFW Convention in Pittsburgh. Patton High School Band and Ashville Junior Drum and Bugle Corps won first prizes in the parade, both sponsored by district VFW posts.
