The Baptist World Gathering expects 20 000 attendees as the World Alliance convenes with 100 plus independent denominations. About 5 000 clergy and 10 bands join a New Jersey band in a Parade of Faith and Freedom to Cleveland Municipal Stadium to view costumed delegates from 60 countries and hear a 3 000-voice choir.
Indiana County men enlist for four years in the U S Navy per local recruiter K R Bolam MMC. Enlistees include Harry Page Diven of Blairsville, Paul Howard Barnhart of Blairsville, Paul Anthony Protz of Blairsville, and Edward Long of Blairsville.
Andrew Hill suffered a fractured right Protz after falling from a house roof while painting. He will train at the Naval Center on Wednesday as part of recovery. Hill’s condition at Indiana Hospital this morning was listed as satisfactory.
Philadelphia July 21 Some 15000 Navy Reservists in the 4th Naval District can expect active duty calls within two weeks. The call targets organized reserve corps below second class petty officer, with some Fleet and Volunteer Reserve members possibly summoned to fill shortages. Retired officers and enlisted men are not affected.
Maj. Gen. William F. Dean of the U S Twentieth Fourth Infantry Division is reported missing for about a day amid the Taejon fighting in Korea. Fellow officers recall his leadership as he directed a bazooka team against Red tanks and inspired young soldiers, while his staff urged confidence that he can take care of himself and will emerge from danger.
Tokyo dispatches report the U S 24th Division holding high ground southeast of burning Taejon, blocking North Korean Red Army advances as Reds fail to press further after capturing Taejon. Maj Gen William F Dean remains unreported in the battle zone amid cautious notes from Gen MacArthur.
Sgt William L Eldridge of the U S Army and U S Air Force Recruiting Station in Indiana Pa announces the enlistment of three local youths on July 19 Marvin Ellsworth Erickson 17 of Marion Center joins the U S Air Force for four years after high school orchestra service He will go to Lackland AFB Texas for processing James Sanford Gardner 19 of Coral enlists in the Regular Army for three years and heads to Fort Knox Kentucky for basic training William Bencic 14 of Hamer City enlists in the Regular Army for three years and will report to Fort Knox Kentucky for basic training
Leonard Ross of Marion Center has passed the state undertakers board exam in Pittsburgh. A graduate of Eckal's School of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, he completed his apprenticeship with John A. Conway Funeral Home in Johnstown.
Report notes painting and redecorating of the Vaint Fire Room and sogia rooms in the Indiana Borough Fire Department within the Borough Building. Cincinnati July 21 Gen Hershey states the United States must locate 900000 men of critical skill to fight. He notes 10600000 men aged 18 to 27, with 7600000 classified, 1200000 not yet classified as 18 year olds, 2700000 veterans, 742000 with dependents, 536000 4-F, 133000 in farming and 133000 in the Reserves.
William Rupe, 80, of Phillipsburg, was struck by a car while walking along Route 80 near Saltsburg and critically injured. He was admitted to Indiana Hospital with a possible skull fracture and facial and neck injuries. driver’s identity was not released.
Second Lt. George Arthur Fleming of Uniontown Indiana County sponsors a new playground on the Robinson county front. The project includes a sliding board trapeze bar see saw and swings for local children. Fleming serves with the 35th Infantry Division now in Korea.
Announcement of a special award for the winning team at the North Central District First Aid Meet to be held at Indiana Fairgrounds on Saturday July 28. Mine Safety Appliances Company of Pittsburgh will present a plaque engraved with team members and depict a first aid team treating an injured man. District manager V A Stanton will present the award, and the winning team will receive 350 dollars. prizes follow for second to fifth places.

An all day program for miners and families at the Indiana Fairgrounds includes sports events band concerts and speeches by coal officials. A Graceton versus Lucerne ball game was slated for 10 30 but canceled due to Lucerne mines operating for coal for the preparedness program. The schedule lists 10 00 registration 10 30 flag raising and 11 00 sports events with Ernest Band to perform.
J Clarence Fairman of Indiana retired after 37 years as a postal clerk. He began work November 11 1918 and was regular clerk from May 1 1915 to July 1 1937, later becoming special clerk. Six regular clerks started, now 14 regular and four substitutes. Mr and Mrs Fairman will reside in Valley o California.
Detroit reports Army talks with Cadillac Division to mass produce a tank, possibly the 28 ton light model. Col David J. Crawford confirms negotiations and predicts a contract soon. Gen Laws ton Collins praises the design as highly maneuverable. Cadillac plans to reactivate a WWII plant. Detroit Arsenal readies two new tanks including a heavy secret design.
Off Korea a Seventh Fleet carrier group reported radar controlled anti-aircraft fire near Wonsan after bombing the large oil refinery and industrial plants. Navy and British jets flew 227 sorties, destroying 30 enemy planes on the ground and damaging locomotives, power stations, and a chemical plant as operations extended from Pohang to Wonsan. Lt. (jg) Wendell B. Muncie was rescued after a loss of a Navy plane, and the new Douglas dive bombers delivered one ton bombs for the first time.
