AP reports an investigation is under way into the derailment of 22 cars of a 40 car Baltimore and Ohio freight train along the Youghiogheny River in Westmoreland County yesterday. Authorities from BKO are probing causes and effects of the incident.
In Blawnex, two inmates identified as Richard C. Smith and Richard A. Erb escaped from the Allegheny County Workhouse. Smith, 22, from Sandy Lake Mercer County, was serving a 144 to 3 year sentence. Erb, 33, from Ernest Indiana County, was jailed for 9 to 18 months. A derailment blocked the B&O main east-west line near Guffey and Shaner, delaying trains as crews cleared wreckage from flatcars carrying two truck trailers with spilled meat and merchandise.
Gov. Scranton marks his 47th birthday with a quiet family celebration at the Marworth estate then starts a two week vacation in the Adirondack Mountains New York with wife Mary and four children. He is expected back August 1 after a campaign swing that covered 32 cities in 26 states.

Wallace abandons his independent presidential bid freeing Goldwater to pursue a harder conservative line in the campaign against Johnson. Wallace appeared on CBS and signaled potential gains for Goldwater in the South while Miller urged unity with moderates and liberals in the North.
