Sutton 2nd of Water Street Indiana son of Mr and Mrs Sutton was named lieutenant in the Corps of Cadets at Pennsylvania Military College Chester Pa for the first semester opening Sept 24 Colonel Frank K Hyatt president and commandant announced Sutton will join the senior class when the corps returns in September He has been active at the college as Glen Club member and manager of the 1939 baseball team A graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy
John Ira Thomas 62 secretary of mines in Governor Arthur H. James's cabinet died at a private sanitarium after heart and kidney ailments. A bachelor, he was a cousin by marriage to the governor and had a long mining career across the United States. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. Also noted is the death of Mrs Grace Wegley Patrick of Brookville.
Councillors of the American Legion Keystone boys camp meet at Indiantown Gap to map a 10 day encampment opening tomorrow. About 1,250 youths aged 16 to 19 from across the state will receive defense training, with 40 senior and 60 junior councillors directing. They will elect local officials in a staged civic process and vote for state offices using mechanical machines.
Bell Telephone crews lay nearly two miles of storm resistant cable to link Homer City with the Blairsville DuBais cable. The spur replaces open wire service and should be finished late this fall at a cost exceeding 8590 dollars, says Harold F. Keck, Bell manager.
Blair Nebraska on July 20 welcomed John Cowan of Brookeville Pennsylvania driving a 1905 two cylinder auto. He boasted a 4000 mile home to Wyoming rodeo and return trek completed in four days. The vintage car previously toured New York World Fair last summer. He quipped about modern cars offering tools extra parts and a rule book while his four tires and shears have carried him for 35 years.
The state saw record heat with Lancaster at 98 and western cities like Oil City reaching 96. Deaths included a farmer near York from heat and two drownings in the Schuylkill and Allegheny rivers. Weather officials warn the heat wave will continue for several days across eastern and western Pennsylvania.
In New Orleans, a spokesman for Louisiana's $150 million sugar industry joined Democratic delegates and the reform governor in a revolt against Secretary Wallace as the Democratic vice presidential candidate. Charles A. Farwell, spokesman for the American Sugar Cane League, wore a Willkie for President button and said Wallace sought to destroy the sugar industry. Louisiana delegates to the national convention deserted Wallace over sugar quota limits, casting their 20 votes for Speaker Bankhead.
The Rev Ross M Haverford Chaplain of Pennsylvania State Grange and pastor of First Presbyterian Monongahela will deliver the sermon at the annual Indiana County Pomona Grange church service Sunday July 21 at 745 PM at Grove Chapel Lutheran Church. His subject will be The Necessity of Growing Up. The Grove Chapel pastor Rev Charles T Schlotter who is also Chaplin of Indiana County Panama Grange will conduct the service.
In Pamplona physicians say Isidoro Cardinal Gomay Thomas, 70, primate of Spain, is near death after months of kidney illness. Doctors report human science has done everything possible to help him.
Shirley Temple, on a leisure day, visited friend Reanna Durbin and watched film production, enjoying a behind the scenes view. She said it was fun to watch pictures being made and sitting behind the camera with no worries. Rumors persist she may stage a comeback under Joe Pasternak, though no official announcement was made.
A July 20 dispatch from Washington reports a Commerce Department economic note claiming potato holes in German airfields indicate the sites were repurposed for agriculture rather than bombing damage. The report notes potatoes, grain, hemp and other crops were grown on military airports, especially in peripheral areas spared from wet use.

He also greeted farmers and their wives at Emil Ehlen’s farm, then flew to Colorado Springs. A telegram from Don Burton noted Irving Cobb plans to back the Republican nominee as a “real fellow Democrat.”
Nazi peace terms dismissed by Britain amid defiant stance to fight on. Berlin reports air raids on Britain, sinking ships, and continued naval pressure as London and press react with ridicule and caution. Churchill may speak in Commons next Tuesday as Britain stays united against invasion threats.
At Havana July 20 the conference of American republics pressed for a firm formula from U S Secretary of State Cordell Hull to counter fifth column actions and to unite Argentina with the other twenty republics. Hull arrived on the Florida for the opening session amid unconfirmed rumors of secret proposals from Washington. He warned U S ships would work to prevent calamities from reaching shores and to keep the hemisphere stable.
Sheriff Chris P. Fox testified to the Dies committee that recruits were promised land taken from Mexicans by the United States as a prize, naming Texas and other states. He cited a meeting with several identified leaders and students involved, alleging Communist influence in promise of redistribution.
