Dry vote ruled invalid over improper advertisement

Judge E E Creps ruled the Cherry Tree borough wet-dry election invalid due to failure to advertise in two or three county papers as required. The minority party’s paper ran only once, on June 14, 1945, prompting the decision. Hilvitz, owner of the Hilvitz Hotel, appealed after liquor license renewal was denied.

Indiana County servicemen discharge notes from WWII centers

Several Indiana County men were discharged during mid July from U S Army and Navy separation centers. Names include Pvt Michael Skapura Homer City Sgt Date F Armstrong Carl B Patchin Glen Campbell Lt (jg) Robert Dimit 1094 Oakland Ave and Harold L Huey Stafford with Lt Romayne Shearer of 1119 School Street Indiana among others. Dimit served on Leyte Luzon Iwo Jima and occupation forces in Japan earning multiple ribbons and the WWII Victory Medal.

Call Off Search For 7 Marines in China Incident

In Tientsin on July 19, United States Marines halted the search for seven Marines held prisoner by Chinese bandits. The move allows a truck headquarters team to negotiate for their release after the detachment was captured north of Chinwangtao a week earlier by about 80 armed Chinese.

Reserve Air Corps Men To Get Training

Colonel Joshua H. Foster Jr announces a program for about 3200 Pennsylvania Air Corps Reserve officers to gain hands on flight and control experience at the Greater Pittsburgh Airport Moon Run Township Cor aopolis PA. Enlisted reserves may receive up to ten hours of flight time monthly with two weeks of active duty yearly for top participants. Training will cover flying regulations operations maintenance aerial navigation meteorology and weather. Bombardiers navigators training announced later with similar courses. Classes will be voluntary and mostly on weekends with on site accommodations and facilities for overnight stays.

Army seeks airborne enlistments for Eleventh and Eighty Second Divisions

The Army announced a concentrated drive to enlist soldiers into airborne units with emphasis on the Eleventh Airborne Division in the Pacific and the Eighty Second Airborne Division in the Zone of the Interior. Enlistments for these units will be for three years, with options for two, seven, or eighteen months in other airborne assignments. continued service depends on maintaining qualifications. Bomb Explodes In Suitcase In California Town

A bomb hidden in a suitcase exploded in Mokulumne Hill California killing Richard Quiralo 36 and his son 11. Injured were Dora 30 and Jack 20. The blast damaged a building housing the telephone exchange post office and library, shattered glass and mailboxes, and sent a bookcase through a wall. Conservation Program Intensified In Pennsylvania

STATE COLLEGE Pa July 19 High state officials and conservation specialists urged a broadened intensive program to conserve Pennsylvania resources at the opening of the first conservation education conference. Secretaries Horst Maize and Pitkin spoke on soil and coal conservation and the need for statewide education from colleges to primary schools. The conference coincided with the first of two three week sessions at Pennsylvania State College to train teachers in conservation value.

Battle Near Manila in Hukbalahap Clash

Manila July 19 heavy fighting raged 35 miles northwest of Manila as twelve Philippine Army police units with mortars armored cars and heavy machine guns battled Hukbalahaps. Washington July 19 A group of House members backed a bid to shelve the Administration civilian atomic energy control bill. After a 29 vote defeat yesterday a roll call on sending the bill back to the military committee for further study was planned. Rep Short said action should wait until peace is official.
