Private Contractors PWA Grant Will Cut Time on All Weather Turnpike
Harrisburg July 19 Construction of the South Penn all weather highway to Pittsburgh through private contractors financed by a PWA grant will cut a year from the building time. Samuel W. Marshall says the direct route tunnel turnpike could be built in under two years employing 6 200 to 9 300 men. Officials expect Washington approval within two days of a four lane 152 mile project as a PWA venture. If approved the PWA would grant about 23 million of the 58 million estimated cost to the State Turnpike Commission with the rest funded by bonds backed by tolls. Approval would drop the WPA allotment and allow private contractors to build the entire route.
