WPA Official Salaries Reveal High Pay in 1930s Pennsylvania

Senator James J. Davis released a list showing 1 949 WPA administrative employees in Pennsylvania earning over $1 000 yearly. The data, gathered from June to June payrolls, names state director Edward W. Jones at 10 000 and notes successors. Also disclosed were 56 National Youth Administration staff based in Philadelphia with salaries up to 3 800, including James W. McGowan and Edward J. Hart.

Film extras held in death case in Los Angeles

An autopsy was ordered on Mia Dorothy May Garland, 31, a former Deputy City Prosecutor, as police held two film extras in connection with her death. Miss Kay Tutwiler, 28, was arrested on suspicion of murder and Luther Allen, 32, detained as a material witness after a report by Garland’s physician Dr Wendell W Starr. Starr said Garland had alcoholism and was seen kicked during a quarrel at her home after a drinking party. Tutwiler denied an altercation.

Builders Threaten Strike Paralyzing Pittsburgh Buildings

Union leaders threaten a citywide strike of 12 000 building workers including hotel and apartment house staff and downtown staff. Four Men Made Prisoners After Gas Theft Near Hillsdale

Four men were held after a gas station theft at Grant Smith's pump in Green Township near Hillsdale. They allegedly fled with eight gallons in a milk can, fired a shot as they escaped to nearby woods where their car awaited. A calf theft near Strongstown is charged against Wade Adams and Mitchell. Adams and Wagner are accused of driving off from the gas station with 13 gallons, their car lacking registration plates. Deputy Irvin said preliminary hearings before Justice Keith are pending and further investigations continue.
