Washington reports Budget Director Charles G Dawes enforces swift efficiency measures to curb public spending. Bureau chiefs race to trim estimates as Dawes orders an inventory of surplus war stocks to convert to cash, aiming for substantial annual savings and a leaner government.
Dawes clamps down on extravagance across departments by mandating return of unused equipment to the general supply committee and converting idle materials to cash. He bars new spending until the Budget Bureau approves U K allocations, treating bureau heads as on trial for fiscal recklessness.
Atlanta July 19 The romance of the Western and Atlantic Railroad the state owned line was told by Chairman Murphey Candler. It built Atlanta from Ross Landing to a major city and linked the South to grain fields in the West. From a $5 million investment Georgia has earned $15.6 million from two 40 year leases and will receive $32.5 million more from a lease with the Nashville Chattanooga and St Louis Railroad. Candler criticizes terminal ground space in Atlanta and Chattanooga and calls for no further space to be sold.
Stanley Zelozony of Chambersville, a miner for Seneca Coal Mining Co., died yesterday after contacting a live wire at work. A native of Poland who came to the United States years ago, he will be buried in the Catholic cemetery tomorrow.
