Farm Hands Get Best Pay In History
HARISBURG July 18 Farm hands in Pennsylvania now receive their highest wages in history. Secretary of Agriculture Miles Horst said today forecast the recent increases will be reflected in higher prices for agriculture products. Costs of fruit vegetables milk eggs meats and all food products will go up. A federal state survey of July 1 showed farm wages are more than double 1940 averages by a goodly margin. Monthly pay for hired men increased 11.75 or 12 percent to 105 without board in the past year. Wages with board rose from 3.70 to 4.20 a day and from 64 to 72.50 a month. Local help will be able to take care of most harvest labor needs. Veterans and industrial workers have reduced labor pressure and created a surplus of summer workers. State Agriculture Department predicted 1946 fruit production will exceed last year with more apples pears and peaches, though cherries will fall due to spring freezes. Early apples are being picked in central and southeastern Pennsylvania orchards. Increased rain is needed in many areas though weather has been ideal for harvest and cultivation.
