Deadlock in France Spain neutrality plan continues

London July 16 French reservations to the neutrality plan for Europe’s Spain crisis kept the non intervention committee deadlocked. Corbin reported need for further instructions while Paris demands substantial progress in port control and troop withdrawal before granting belligerent status to Franco. Italian and German acceptance noted but reconciling Italo German and Franco Russian differences remains.

Pastor Tells of River Case at Pittsfield

Police said a signed 11 page statement by Rev. C. B. Newton describes striking his supposed friend Mrs. Dennis Kelly with a hammer during a roadside quarrel after she deserted her husband. Newton, 51, recounts a drive from Paris Massachusetts to California, the attack on the Illinois side of the Mark Twain bridge near Hannibal Missouri, and the body being pushed into the Mississippi near Louisiana Missouri. Officers say over 1900 dollars from Mrs. Kelly’s funds were given to an adopted daughter before Newton’s arrest.

Harrisburg July 16 1947 The State Publicity Commission with 500000 to spend in advertising the state named Walker and Downing of Pittsburgh as its advertising agents Warren Van Dyke secretary of highways and chairman announced. Decatur Alabama July 16 Pry Defense Counsel Samuel S Leibowitz announced he was ready to take the Scottsboro case to the United States Supreme Court for a third time after a jury sentenced Clarence Norris to death on the freight train attack near Scottsboro. Norris had been condemned twice before with Supreme Court reversals. The second defendant's trial was postponed to Monday due to illness of Clarence Watts of Huntsville.
