Pasadena scientists report Mariner 4 began sending the first lines of Mars pictures. The 575-pound craft relayed data from beyond Mars as it heads toward an solar orbit, with 200 lines to complete an image in about 8 hours 35 minutes.
World leaders and the public mourn the death of Adlai E. Stevenson the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations at age 65 in London. President Johnson called him a great emancipator and eloquent voice. Truman Eisenhower and U Thant praised his foreign service and humanity.
A fatal fire in Apollo Borough claimed the life of 2-year-old David Allen Bence and injured his brother four-year-old Bobby Bence. Their mother Phyllis Ross Bence was treated for shock as firefighters battled an early morning blaze caused possibly by a gas burner explosion. The building owner was Geneva Bence, with all residents on the first floor escaping unharmed.

The bodies Johnny Craig Rainer four and Lloyd Lamar Rainer two were found by their mother Billie Ruth Rainer after a babysitter reported the children missing following a snack visit. Police say the incident occurred soon after the children were brought inside.
A counterfeit ten dollar bill found in a tavern deposit bag prompted Blairsville police to involve the Secret Service in Pittsburgh. Conemaugh Valley Bank notified police Wednesday, with similar notes reported in Latrobe and other Western Pennsylvania towns.

Airman Andre Guillet, son of Waterbury couple, parachuted from 3000 feet July 2 after his main chute failed to open. He landed hard and suffered a chipped vertebra but was hospitalized in near perfect condition. doctors expect release next week. Guillet, a combat controller with the 319th Air Commando Squadron at Eglin, said he focused on emergency procedures and felt no time to be scared.

Adlai Ewing Stevenson, former governor and U N ambassador, died in London at 65 from a heart attack near the U S Embassy. Vice President Hubert H Humphrey and Stevenson's three sons accompanied the body as it was prepared for burial in Illinois. About 2,000 onlookers observed the procession after arrangements in London.
Blairsville borough officials announced a $3 000 effort by Gilbert Associates Inc to locate and repair water line leaks. A three week survey of lines from the Hillside reservoir found leaks that reduced daily water loss by 200000 gallons and earned approval from the State Health Dept official after reservoir inspection. The Chestnut Ridge reservoir holds about 32000000 gallons despite drought conditions.
State police from the Indiana substation reported two motorists escaped injury in a 1 p.m. crash on Route 217 just north of Blairsville. Ernest K. Daugherty, 21, of Blairsville and William F. Bolinger, 35, of Avonmore R.D. 1 were involved. Damage to both cars was estimated at 300 dollars.
