Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin must rely on a single ascent engine to return from the lunar surface. The engine, under the LM descent stage, must fire for about six minutes to reach lunar orbit and rendezvous with Michael Collins in lunar orbit. If the engine fails before six minutes, escape to orbit is impossible.
