Day's Riot in Philadelphia 1836 Shocked City and Colored Residents
A fragmented historical account recalls the Philadelphia riot of July 12 1836 sparked by racial tensions. A prominent consul Robert R Stewart was attacked in his Sixth Street home by an African spy named Juan, leading to violent mobs targeting houses of color on Seventh and Shippen streets and Red Row. Fire and assaults spread through Highth Street and nearby blocks as police struggled to contain the violence. By July 14 armed colored residents defended a house on St Mary Street prompting police intervention and the quieting of the unrest.
