The Superior Court sustains the Pure Food provisions and the quarter sessions decision in Charles W. Spenger’s trial for ham burger preservation. Spenger is fined 50 dollars and costs after a lengthy case. The court also holds selling cigars on Sunday does not breach the peace. Addison Foster, charged with violating the 1794 Sunday law, is discharged, finding no disorder or bail jurisdiction by the magistrate.
Latrobe detectives West and Fry traveled to Ohio to test bloodhounds owned by their master. The dogs chased a staged “escaped prisoner” and nearly caught him as he dangled from a tree, tearing clothing but proving the dogs effective.
A severe thunderstorm in Altoona Pennsylvania drenched streets six inches deep and flooded trolley lines halting trolley service and crippling business. Flooded country farms ruined standing crops, with damages estimated in thousands of dollars. In Osklapg California an explosion at Giant Powder works killed eight people.
Erie Pennsylvania July 14 Two thousand National Guard of Pennsylvania and Kentucky encamped on Erle marshes named Camp Captain W S Jones. Fifth and Sixteenth regiments arrived at sunset. heavy rains turned the ground to a morass with pools and deep ruts. Wagons sank to hubs. some officers’ tents sit in water six inches deep. drainage varies by street and unit.
In Uniontown Pennsylvania July 14 scores gathered to honor Frank M Fuller former secretary of state. Gov Samuel W Pennypacker United States Senator Penrose and about fifty prominent figures attended along with Fayette residents. Dr A S Milholland led a simple service with no eulogy as requested by Mrs Fuller. Honorary pallbearers included Pennypacker Penrose and several state officials. Active pallbearers listed among others.
President Roosevelt welcomed Baron Roman Rousnovitch Rosen, the new Russian ambassador, at Sagamore Hill with speeches and a ceremonial exchange. Rosen traveled from New York aboard the naval yacht Sylph, escorted by Assistant Secretary Peirce, and dined with the Roosevelts.
