Eisenhower aims for united GOP support after a hard fought nomination battle. He met with Republican lawmakers as he formally accepted the nomination and called for a crusade to end wartime waste and corruption in high places, seeking to heal party divisions.
Ike's choice for vice president is Richard Nixon of California, unopposed for the nomination as GOP unity grows. Eisenhower won the presidential bid on a single ballot over Tal, Warren, Stassen, and MacArthur, pledging a campaign focused on tomorrow's promise. Summerfield named party chair, with Weeks as a possible successor. Eisenhower addressed 10,000 at the stockyards hall promising a fighting campaign.
County Commissioners Lloyd C. Rosensteel and William Hildebrand and Clerk Harry Wilson attended a two day session at State College on tax assessment legislation issues. Sponsored by the Institute of Local Government of Pennsylvania State College the Public Service Institute and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Commissioners. Topics included determining market values assessment records assessing farm and forest lands assessing mineral resources and the use of aerial maps in assessing with more than 100 attendees.
The 26th District of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Indiana Post will hold its annual picnic at Blairsville VFW Club Route 22 west of Blairsville on Sunday opening at 1:00 p.m. Veterans families and friends may attend with a basket lunch. Schedule includes a band concert 1:00 to 1:30, Beaver Falls Blairsville VFW ball game 2:15, and a 2:00 meeting of district veterans.
A 19 year old Nanty Glo youth, Andrew Hartack of Fifth Hill, Nanty Glo, was killed when the car he rode in overturned on a sharp curve on Colver road two miles east of Colver. Two other occupants, Leonard Stager, 20, and Roger Guela, 21, both of Nanty Glo, escaped with minor injuries. Hartack was thrown from the auto. death was due to a skull fracture.
Pennsylvania's 53 votes were pivotal in Eisenhower's nomination, but the Keystone delegation faced critique for delaying their switch. Minnesota shifted first, with a 28 vote bloc to secure the move, while Pennsylvania could have delivered all 70 on the first ballot. The event is framed as a contest between timing and strategy in the party's nomination drama.
Blairsville Borough Council faces ordinance paper questions as Burgess W. McKee delays signing an ordinance to provide social security for municipal workers. Council President James Turner and Borough Secretary Ralph Gessler deny delaying action and say the ordinance was prepared on proper paper and the action was lawful.

CIO United Steelworkers President Philip Murray plans another meeting with industry officials to end the 41 day national steel strike. Officials from U S Steel, Jones & Laughlin, and Bethlehem Steel joined 90 minutes of talks before adjourning to confer. Industry aims to restart iron ore production as 23 000 ore miners who joined the strike in sympathy remain idle.
Chicago report notes Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's running mate Sen. Richard Nixon pledges a strong fight against Communism as the great issue of the race. He faults the administration for not halting aggression, calls for a more effective program to defend the nation, and says the 1952 platform would be shorter with less adjectives. The California senator, who helped expose Alger Hiss, claims his views align with Eisenhower on foreign and domestic policy. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower greeted scores of core lawmakers at the Blowstone Hotel in Chicago and pledged to back a Republican Congress in November. Attendees included Sen. John Bricker of Ohio, Eugene Millikin of Colorado, Homer Ferguson of Michigan, Tom Coleman of Wisconsin, and Sen. Richard Nixon. Taft campaign aides assisted. Taft did not attend.
Greensburg 40 year old Richard Shadie, longtime Westmoreland Crime Committee chairman, is held on a $1,000 bond after arrest on a charge of cashing a $179.50 insurance check while receiving $500 public assistance from June 1950 to February 1951. He, an inspector on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, was previously on relief rolls and had led a grand jury probe into the New Kensington municipal administration and police. Twenty first aid teams have registered to compete for honors at the Tenth Annual First Aid Meet at the J. B. Mack Community Center on Saturday July 19. The event, a basket picnic, is sponsored by the North Central District Safety Association with cooperation from the Pennsylvania Department of Mines the U S Bureau of Mines and the United Mine Workers of America. The teams aim to represent the North Central Association in the state wide contest in Harrisburg on September 6. Full July 18 meet details will be published next week.
